Glen and Cora-our neighbors in town. [preachin]

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

The old man would be standin or settin outside his house every mornin when I went to work, unless it was too cold. On those days he would be lookin out the front door to wave as I drove on by. In the summertime, he'd be settin in his chair when I came in after work. He'd wave again and kinda just shake his old bald head and grin. Most of the time I'd walk across the street and visit a spell with the old dude.

He and his wife had lived in the country for years and years. He worked in the oil field from roustabout to his last job of pumpin those wells. They were talked into movin to town by somebody who meant well but had no idea how it would affect this old man and his wife. After he retired from a lifetime of hard work--he didn't have very much to do with his time in town. He wasn't a coffee drinker, loafer and never went uptown to "hob nob" with other old duffers. He stayed home with his wife and they were both miserable together.

When I came in from work and didn't walk across the street and loaf with'm for a few days--he'd mosey on over when I came home! He'd wait and watch for me comin in and be ready and waitin to visit. I liked the old fella, really enjoyed loaf'n with'm but sometimes after a day of extremely hard work myself it wasn't the first thing on my mind and tired old body to visit before even gettin something to eat and drink. If he figgered I'd be too tired to visit he'd mosey on over and visit with Lil Dumplin when she'd be outside workin in the yard in the daytime. She thought the world of him too.

We moved to the country in 1978 and that stopped the visits with'm. I saw'm several times at the store and even went by his house a few times to visit. My daddy died in 83 and this old dude didn't live much longer either. He had no desire to live anymore when most of his life had been spent in the country. I am beginning to understand now [that I'm gettin older] how he felt. We may have to someday move to town too for medical reasons but ---not unless Lil Dumplin and I are both crazy!

I was noticin tonite the "wildlife" that comes up to our back porch lookin for meat scraps etc. that I've thrown outside. They had a feast tonight from all the chik'n skin/fat and other "junk" they pack in those legquarter bags to tip the scales a little more.

Almighty God will give you the desires of your heart if you don't mind livin for Him. I'm attempting to live for Him everyday and in every way I know how. I hope my little attempts to please Him will help out some precious folks. If through any of my little stories I've helped somebody then He gets all the Honor, Praise and Glory!

Thank you Lord for the honor of presenting you to a lost and uncaring world. old hoot gibson. Matt.24:44

It sounds like a little taste of heaven on earth. It is something I dream of.One day I hope to move far away from it all too. Hoot your "little stories" as you call them help in ways that you have never dreamed of.
