When a man has given of himself to wear the uniform of a US Armed service, and gone through warfare, and is now "retired" and not in the best of health, what better way to show him that his fellow citizens honor his efforts than to give him a proverbial "leg up" when one is needed? eh?

He would not have to claim it as income, as it is a gift! You can make a gift to any one person for $10,000. Also even if he did have to claim it as income with his standard exemption and his personal exemption and the fact that disability and SS are generally non- taxable, he still would not have to pay any taxes on it. I imagine that should bring some relief to your kind considerate heart!!!

Also in order to claim him as a dependent you must show that you contributed over 1/2 of his support. You would have to do this indivdually as the IRS does not allow partial exemptions. And since ti is well known that your contribution was 2 cetns, you would fall far short of the necessary amount.

That is the hardest part of tax preparation, trying to teach people who THINK they know the rules better than you do. Of course you are MORE THAN WELCOME to go research the entire tax code, as a matter if fact PLEASE go search the entire tax code. Preferrably until next year or so!!!!
