Celery Seeds only for planting?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

This past week I found an old jar marked Celery Seeds and yes they do look like seeds. Are they ONLY for planting in the garden or can I use them for cooking...soups or whatever??

Ben, depending on how old they are they might still be good for cooking. Mostly I have only used them in pickles whole. In cooking you might want to grind them to let the flavor loose. I use a mortar and pestle.

If they smell good they are still good to cook with, put some in anything you would use celery in, but just a little at a time the seeds are normaly stronger in flavor than fresh celery. I use it in potato or pasta salads, too.
