Looking to buy 4-H Pigs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My 12-year-old son is looking to buy a couple of pigs for 4-H. Yes, it's that time of year for the hog project to begin anew. Specifically, is there anyone who lives in the Northern Virginia area who has 50-60 lb. pigs to sell at this time? Thanks!

There is livestock auction in Hagerstown, Md on Mondays and Wednesdays and in Westminster, Md on Thursdays. If you call late in the afternoon on the day of sale they will tell you if they have any baby pigs. There are also designated sales for pigs.

There is a community want ad paper called " The Valley Trader" that always has listings for livestock and poultry - with sellers throughout the Shenandoah Valley, and into West Virginia and Maryland. Locations are clearly designated by phone code in the front of the paper.

I know you can buy the VT at gas stations along Rt 15 in the vicinity of Lucketts, and on the other side of the Potomac at Point of Rocks.

You may be able to access it online. Try a Google.com search

Your county extension agent should be able to give you information about the 4-H clubs available in your area. In my area, the Livestock Club members raise cows, sheep, and pigs for sale at the annual 4-H Show in July. Children ages 8-18 have lots of fun raising animals, keeping good animal husbandry records, and then selling the animals for a nice profit. Often, college savings accounts are built as a result of 4-H project sales.

Shoot! Call your vet! He'll know who is raising what in your area, and can steer you to someone with quality animals.
