Read any Good books lately?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I have been reading a good bit. Carrie Bender has some books about Amish life that are really neat. Also I have been reading Beverly Lewis. I picked up "Main Street" by Sinclair Lewis to re-read. I have about 20 books by my bed to read, but I fall asleep too early!

Melissa~

I read the Carrie Bender books too. They are really good, I just wish I could get them around here. My SIL in PA gets them for me, but they are getting ready to move back home, so I guess I will have to order them online. I am just starting to read James Dobson's BRINGING UP BOYS. I have three and am really getting protective (more so than normal) of them and their activities, so I thought this would help to reassure me.

I got them at the library, maybe you could order them there, through inter-library loan. I want to read that James Dobson book also, I had forgotten about it, thanks for the reminder.

Am re-reading all the J.R.R. Tolkien books, THE HOBBIT and the three RING books. I'd not enjoyed them as much the first time, back zillions of years ago. Also, my sister, daughter and I trade books, across three states, so I have a recent trade's worth of probably 20 or 30 books in here to work my way thru. These are mostly cookbooks, philosophy, lifestyle and good, clean who-dun-its.

Spirit Warriors by Stu Weber (Christian non-fiction) I've read this before but after recommending it to several friends lately, had to re-read it myself. :)

True Devotion by Dee Henderson (Christian fiction) I'm really getting to like this author! It's hard to put her books down, so don't start one late at night.

The Ishbane Conspiracy by Randy Alcorn (Christian fiction)

Hello Melissa,

I am reading The Mission Earth Series by L. Ron Hubbard. It is what is called a dekology because it is a 10 volume set. Best sci-fi ever written as far as I am concerned.

Sincerely,

Ernest

Hi Melissa.

I just finished a book called A Child Called "It". It's a true story written by Dave Pelzer. His was the third worst case of child abuse in the state of California.

I saw him on the Oprah show a few weeks ago and decided to by the 1st book about him.

He will be in Northern Wisconsin for a seminar about Child Abuse in May sometimes. I'm hoping to attend that seminar.

He states that as of his writing his book in 1995, that there is over 3 million cases of child abuse reported each year and the numbers are growing.

Let's all offer up prayers for these children.

I have just finished reading, "All Souls" By Michael Patrick MacDonald. It is a story about the author growing up in the rough neighborhoods of Boston. I couldn't put the book down. I grew up so differently than the author did. I don't think I could have lived in those neighborhoods. To much crime, death and poverty.A great book. Surprising the author grew up to be a good guy!

Just finished FRESH WIND, FRESH FIRE by Jim Cymbala--a really thought- provoking book, has challanged me to more prayer. Other late reads: Max Lucado's He Chose the Nails. Bad Girls of the Bible. A couple of years ago I read all 3 of David Peltsher's(?)books. My favorite author is probably Grace L. Hill--I have most of her books, and she wrote more than a hundred. Have read all that I have, some of them several times. Am now working on Anne of Green Gables set, have read the first and started the second. My mom likes to read, so I pull a sneaky--for birthdays, Christmas, etc. I give her books that I like or want to read. The Anne books are hers from Christmas. I ALWAYS have a book or two plus magazines in the reading. I'd almost rather read than eat; have been known to stir something on the stove with one hand and hold a book in the other hand so I could read while I stirred.

Seconds on "A Very Small Farm" and "A Book of Bees." I'm reading Laurie Colwin's "Home Cooking" and "More Home Cooking" for the umpteenth time - lovely books. Also since spring is coming, "A Northeast Gardener's Year."

I am coming out of lurkdom to second Lenette's choice for Dee Henderson(Christian fiction). I have been reading her "O-Malley Family" series and they are very good. The first book "The Negotiator" starts with Kate O'Malley and she is a hostage negotiator, followed by the "Guardian" which is about her brother Marcus who is an FBI agent, then the "Truth Seeker" which is about her sister Lisa who is a forensic scientist and the current one is the "Protector" which is about her brother Jack who is a firefighter. I should add that there is another one which actually starts the O- Malley series but isn't part of it called "Danger in the Shadows" Like Lenette said don't start them at night or you won't be getting any sleep. Ha! Now this former librarian will slink back to lurkdom..
