SCL-SLSF interchanging

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

List, I am curious for those in and around Birmingham, AL and Hamlet, NC if it was a frequent occurrence to see SLSF units back during the late 1960s and 1970s in these areas when SCL was running mixed power with the Frisco? If so what types would most likely have been present? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Justin May

I have photos of Frisco SD45's making it down to Sanford Florida. My Photo is from 1/80 and the Friso unit leads a mixed SCL/Family lines lash-up. How sweet it was!

I remember & photgraphed SLSF units going by the Jacksonville, FL Amtrak in the middlw 70's. The above named units are right. Bob

While working in Waycross, GA back in 1974-1976, I had the opportunity to actually see the types of power that came thru the yard. One run thru train pair was 333-334, WAycross-B'ham/ manifest freight that ran thru to Nashville. The power was always Frisco: u30b-GP40-U33b, several types, all 4-axle, no less than 4 units. The train we assembled at Waycross was 334, departing around midnight. It's counterpart, 333, arrived WAycross in the morning, around 7am.

During a local slideshow years ago, a shot of a GP-40 (SLSF) at the unlikely location of Brooksville,FL was shown, probably as power for the local out of Tampa.Possibly a reader of the Forum can add other pertinent details regarding this event.

Saw SL-SF on Manchester line in 1970s - recall GP35, GP38, U25B, U30B and SD45. Also saw SL-SF on Atl-Ham line frequently - same models. Occasionally would see SL-SF units on ex-ACL line through Charleston and on Dothan Sub, so, at least once in a while, they got kidnapped off the run-through trains. Rumor at the time was that SL-SF stopped the run-through practice because they were often unhappy with the SCL power. Not that far-fetched - I saw lots of SCL GP40/-2 at E. Thomas Yard in Birmingham, but also saw U30/33Bs and Alco and GE six-axles - not exactly first line power. David

I recall GP-38's, 40's and U-25B's. Some ran as far south as Jacksonville.
