Night sounds,

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Down here on Gulf coast, Its warm at night, I like to sit out on porch swing, and listen to the sounds. I love the sound of a train whisle far off, and we have lots of tree frogs, that sing up a storm. We have a fire fly once in a while, not as many as we use too. Its quite time to think, What are your sounds at night? Today was a hot day, and I have been trying to get every thing out of hot house, I love all my plants, I have way to many, I hang them in tree"s for the summer, My air conditioner is on, the house was 83 inside today. Just thought I would talk to you for a while, Love you all

Oh Irene, it sounds so nice. I forget that you all are having such nice weather down south. We are still building fires here! It has been a little warmer though and was in the low 60's today, but cloudy and rainy!

Irene, where in Texas are you? I grew up in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (Pharr) and often what you write sounds like "home". Our night sounds here, this time of year, are spring peepers, some bird sounds and, unfortunately on nice nights, the roar of atv's on the railroad that runs through the back of our farm. We're working on this problem because, not only is the noise annoying, but they sometimes cut fences and do other vandalism. Without that, it's peaceful.

Irene, I always enjoy your posts so much.

My college student daughter is down in Corpus Christi visiting some friends from her church during spring break. She said it was so nice, that they had a bonfire one night. Today she went to Padre Island. She is really enjoying the warm weather. We had a front come in and it was much cooler today.

It rained here earlier, but cleared off-I can hear peepers and the birds at dusk have really started singing the last few nights. Sometime we hear coyotes howling-it sounds kind of eerie. It was in the 60's today, supposed to cool down to fourties tommorrow.

Sometimes we hear the owls in the wooded area next to us, once in a while a jet off to the east landing or taking off. (Sao Jose dos Campos has one of Brazil's largest airports; Embraer makes their planes here.) Other than that, my snoozing....

Irene, we don't dare leave house plants out at night any time of the year as they would likely freeze!

Our night sounds are not particularly relaxing...dogs barking (neighbors'), cattle mooing (neighbors'), cats arguing and an occasional fight, and too often our horses are squabbling. We have one mare who doesn't like any other horses around her and stomps, kicks, squeals and throws temper tantrums until everyone clears out of her area. We have another mare who likes to have everyone around her, and throws a fit exactly like the other mare until everyone joins her (sigh). We often have to get out of bed and go throw a little extra hay to distract everyone for awhile so we can get some sleep.

During the summer we do have a nice chorus from all the frogs singing. I always enjoy listening to them. Reminds me of when I was a kid, we had a creek running through our property and the frogs sang me to sleep every night most of the year.

Here in the frozen north land our night sounds are coyote, fox, who set off every dog in the hood. The Great horned and the Screech owl, the occaisional racoon fight, and all the misc. snick snackers as my DW calls them(anything that makes a noise in the woods at night)We are a good month from frogs, crickets and the warm season night sounds.

Hey Rosalie, you a former PSJA Bear? I'm born and raised a McAllen Bulldog, just west of your former home. Small world.
