It didn't happen By Carolyn Baker Online Journal Contributing Writer

March 17, 2002—From the Wilderness has been reporting since late September 2001 that there is an abundance of documentation which indicates that U.S. Intelligence was aware of impending terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

As Michael Ruppert, Tom Flocco and others have investigated the connections between the domains of finance, terrorism and intelligence, a disturbing, frightening, picture begins to emerge. It is a scenario of an irrational, out-of-control U.S. government deeply involved in drug trafficking and money laundering through Wall Street and other venues, also having prior knowledge of horrifying atrocities perpetrated on the American people and the world, in order to create and perpetuate a long-term conflict in Eurasia and wherever the so-called "war or terrorism" should necessitate.

In recent From the Wilderness (FTW) articles, geologist Dale Allen Pfieffer, has documented a dramatic decrease in world oil production—a decrease that cannot be postponed indefinitely and for which there is no known remedy at this time. Juxtaposed with Zbigniew Brzezinski's Grand Chessboard and the reality of a highly precarious economic "bubble" in the U.S. economy created by decades of Wall Street money laundering of drug profits, we are confronted with corruption and crimes against humanity beyond the pale, perpetrated by the ruling elite of America.

For some, it may be easier to simply say, in one way or other, "It didn't happen" or "It couldn't happen." Perhaps eyewitnesses like Cele Castillo, who watched CIA planes in El Salvador being loaded with cocaine, bound for the United States during the Iran-Contra years, were "misperceiving." Or maybe brave whistle-blower Catherine Austin Fitts, who was fired from the Department of Housing and Urban Development because she was too successful in cleaning up Oliver North's Iran-Contra fraud at HUD, must have been having a bad hair day when she insisted on audited and place-based financial statements that illuminated HUD's slush fund operations. And likewise, is it not a bit more palatable to conclude that U.S. Intelligence got "caught with its pants down" on September 11 than to pursue glaring evidence of foreknowledge?

All of this raises an issue that the American psyche has never fully confronted, namely, that our government is not uniquely "special," "virtuous" or beyond diabolical behavior. As an historian and college professor, I do not enjoy teaching my students historical facts such as the financing of the American eugenics movement of the late-nineteenth century by robber barons such as Andrew Carnegie, E.H. Harriman or Harvey Kellogg—the latter being especially disturbing when I eat my corn flakes. (In case you didn't know, eugenics is a philosophy of "improving" the human race through social control of human reproduction.) The privileged power brokers of Victorian America loved the eugenics theory and gave billions of dollars to support it. Not surprisingly, those tycoons, and their offspring, were deeply involved in doing business with Hitler's Third Reich in the 1930s and even illegally during World War II. Two key families involved in these enterprises were named Harriman and Bush. In fact, extensively documented in George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography by Webster Tarpley and Anton Chaitkin is the fact that "virtually all Nazi trade with the United States was under the supervision of the Harriman interests and functionaries such as Prescott Bush, father of President George H. W. Bush."

Likewise, during the 1930s, the U.S. Public Health Service conducted experiments on syphilis with black men who signed up for "free medical care" in Tuskegee, Alabama. Some of them had the disease, but they were never told. They were told that they had "bad blood" and were denied medical care so that the effects of the disease could be studied without their knowledge. One hundred twenty-eight of them died, 40 wives were infected and 19 children contracted the disease at birth. The infamous "Tuskegee Experiment" remains a disgraceful skeleton in the closet of the American psyche.

Equally despicable were the injections of American citizens with plutonium without their knowledge in the '40s and '50s by the U.S. government, even as it was railing against the medical experimentation of Josef Mengle on inmates of Auschwitz. Almost simultaneously, in the 1950s, the CIA's MK Ultra Program freely dispensed LSD and other mind-altering substances to medical and mental patients without their knowledge, and casually utilized electric shock and even psychosurgery on its subjects, ostensibly to understand the dynamics of brainwashing. Numerous individuals died, disappeared or were left permanently scarred, mentally and emotionally.

A profusion of documentation now confirms conspiracies to assassinate President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King in the 1960s. Peter Dale Scott and Fletcher Prouty (see FTW links to their websites) have shed the most light on JFK's assassination, and de-classified FBI documents indicate that given the socio-political upheaval in the United States in 1968, Robert Kennedy (who swore he would uncover the truth about his brother's assassination) and Martin Luther King (who had begun to speak out against the war in Vietnam) were perceived as obstacles to social control and to the FBI's principal objective of destroying alliances between the white anti-war movement and the civil rights movement in the name of maintaining national security. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the Phoenix Program in Vietnam, engineered by CIA's William Colby, carried out a heinous operation of "neutralization," a euphemism for the murder of between 20,000 to 40,000 Vietnamese military personnel and citizens in the years from 1968 to 1971.

While I do not delight in imparting this information to my students, these are pieces of the truth of our country's history. Unequivocally, the majority of history taught in high schools in America is of the Disneyland school, which is committed to "making nice," being patriotic and above all, selling textbooks. James Loewen, author of LIES MY TEACHER TOLD ME: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong, notes that "because textbooks employ such a godlike tone, it never occurs to most students to question them." This history professor is committed to questioning them, particularly when much of traditional scholars in the field of American history downplay or dismiss the aforementioned incidents as merely indicative of the times in which they occurred and are highly unlikely to occur in the 21st century.

In the same manner, I am committed to speaking the whole truth about American history—the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between. Often, this commitment bears extraordinarily painful consequences. When we are willing to face the excruciating truths of American history, whether they pertain to 9-11 or 17th century Native American genocide by European Americans, or any of the atrocities perpetrated by the U.S. government to which I have referred, we are forced to confront our deeply ingrained, distinctly Amero-centric fallacy that America the beautiful is also "America pure as the driven snow," or "America beyond the baser behavior of 'lesser' nations."

Everything in our culture and our upbringing instills in us a sense of specialness fraught with arrogance and self-righteousness in relation to the rest of the world. "Other" nations are corrupt, we gloat, pointing to some sleazy Latin American dictator. "Other" nations murder and torture their citizens without regard for the preciousness of life—but not in America.

We use the phrase, "conspiracy theory," almost synonymously with "schizophrenic" to describe (and smear) theories that feel too unbearable to believe. Perhaps some other government in some far-off land, run by tyrants with strange-sounding names are trafficking in drugs and laundering the profits through their stock exchanges. In some other nation, there is no rule of law, and the government allows its citizens to be massacred in an instant in order to manufacture and maintain a war for monetary and political gain or to replenish dwindling natural resources.

We squirm at the notion, now extremely well-documented, that the Pentagon had broken Japanese codes in 1941 and had foreknowledge of an imminent attack on Pearl Harbor which cost more lives than the attack on the World Trade Center. Understandably, we would prefer to watch the 2001 Hollywood blockbuster version of the event, replete with romance and gutted of historical accuracy. The government of the United States of America permitting an attack? It wouldn't happen. It couldn't happen. It didn't happen. Yaddah, yaddah, yaddah.

As I have shared my views on 9-11 with my peers and colleagues, I consistently hear, "Oh, that's such a negative view." Yes, indeed. And who would want to believe it? Most ordinary, decent folk want to believe the best about each other and the human race.

To face the evidence squarely that U.S. intelligence had foreknowledge and even profited financially from the attacks is frightening at worst, depressing at best. We begin to sense how the German people must have felt in the 1930s, and we recall that psychologists tell us that denial is a legitimate defense mechanism which is often necessary for coping with overwhelmingly painful realities.

So then how do we face the truth with courage and grace? I can only draw from my own experience and those of holocaust survivors who tell us that knowledge, no matter how excruciating, is power, that connection with each other and the human race is more empowering and that connection with something or someone greater than ourselves is most empowering. Who would not prefer to wave the flag and sing "God Bless America" to losing one's sense of collective righteousness? Especially when we've had so much assistance from George W. Bush who speaks of "us" as the holy and impeccable and "them" as the evildoers. To lose our "special" status as a nation and as a people is extremely humbling, yet in that humility, may lie the gifts of heart, soul, courage and commitment that allow us to take a stand for truth and to become as Frederick Douglass said, a "lover of one's country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins."

Having been raised by folks who were skeptical,at best, of our beloved governemnt structure and how they have and continue to pervert the Constitution none of this was a news flash to me, but I am glad to see someone in the mainstream system is finally saying something and starting to make it into publications with the facts. I

Very interesting! Not particularly eye opening though. I believe our government capable of anything. Especially over the last 40 years. I say we toss all of them out of office and start over. All of them!

Teachers, plumbers, carpenters, skilled and unskilled laborers, moms, grandparents these are who should be making our laws. Not sleazy, self serving, money hungry, egomaniacs with law degrees or big business affiliation. 2 things we need to make our nation great again. 1)God, 2)respect and adherence to The US Constitution, and The Bill of Rights. Or is that 3?

Anyway, thanks for the article Doreen.

As repugnant as this is I'm not really surprised. IMO the Bush family is DIRTY, DIRTY, DIRTY!

Wow, Poe Poe. I honestly thought of you when I read this.:).

It isn't just the Bush family, there is soooo much fraud that has been perpetrated on us that we need to really strive to find the truth of things. It made me happy to see that a "titled" individual was willing to spell it out!

I know Doreen its not just the Bush family but considering we have one as prez now and another presumably waiting in the wings for his shot at it we should be more wary methinks.
