Osage Orange, Rosa Rugosa, Nine Bark. Check with Jasper-Pulaski nursery too. They are north of me and I have ordered from them before!

Jason,

The best plants for your hedge will depend on the length of your hedge, its purpose, sun, moisture and pH situation. Give some more details and someone will be able to point you to suitable species and cultivars.

Also depends on the neighbours. Sometimes hawthorn and Russian Olive are the best choices.

We planted 450 feet of Amur River privet hedge on the front of our property. It looks great! We get numerous compliments from neighbors and passersby on our beautiful hedge, which is only 3 years old. It will only get better-looking as it grows bigger and gets thicker. We ordered from Jung's Nursery (catalog) for about $1 a plant, and have been very pleased.

I need more info. Hedge or windbreak? How tall do you want it to grow? Do you want it to provide wildlife habitat or food? Is it ok if it's a little invasive by seed or stolen(root). Native specie or doesn't it matter. Lots of good choices for Indiana. I like lilac for cover but some viburnums or prunus are best for habitat although a bit more expensive. Privet is ok but I'd choose something else. We have about 500 ft. of Prunus Tomentosa(Nanking cherry) The songbirds go nuts on the berries but it is rather short lived (10-15 years) and they do come up everywhere from seed.

Techny Arborvitae(white cedar) best evergreen hedge-windbreak. I have seen excellant windbreaks of just about any evergreen spruce, juniper,or even broadleaf evergreens in Ind. Pine are not a good choice for Mn. I don't know about Ind. To open and loose here. All can be had mail order or my preference if possible special order from a local business. I always prefer giving my business to Main street rather than a big chain.Space 4 - 10 feet. Time or money.
