PETA Stages Naked Protest Near White House

Hour-Long Demonstration Was Against Circuses

WASHINGTON -- Two women painted their bodies orange with black stripes and whiskers and then sat down in cages on Pennsylvania Avenue today.

The women were protesting what they called the inhumane treatment of circus animals.

Kristie Phelps, of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said that animals are forced to perform at circuses under harsh conditions. While the two nude women were uncomfortable during their hour-long protest, Phelps said it's nothing compared to what animals go through every day.

Representatives from Ringling Brothers were there too, to defend their treatment of animals. The circus also attacked PETA for engaging in what they call "irresponsible and exploitative stunts," rather than actually doing something to help.
