Cheaper lens caps?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

a few months ago, i remember reading a posting about where to get cheaper lens caps (both front and rear) for LTM lenses. It was a japanese company that sells them for their lenses but they also fit Leica brand lenses and were much cheaper than the Leica brand caps. can anyone point me to a URL to order some of these?

Best deal is to use Voigtlander caps and order those straight from Stephen Gandy website at http://www.cameraquest.com/.

I found a 49mm cap marked "Olympus" that fits my 28mm Elmarit, on the airport floor in Houston.

At the other end of the scale, I spent $22.50 for a chintzy 39mm cap that didn't even say "Leica" on it, at a store on Wabash Ave. in Chicago.

What this country needs is a good $5.00 lens cap.

Bayonet mount lens caps? We've mentioned Konica caps as one cheap alternative (Konica in NY sold them to someone here). Steve Gandy's site has japanese-made deep caps for the 21 Super-Angulons and first- version 28 - and may have others, as well. www.cameraquest.com

I have a Tamron cap that fits the detachable hood of my 1973 vintage 50mm Summilux-M lens. I've seen Tamron caps that fit R lenses also. They're well made and, I'm sure, cheaper than Leica caps.

Regarding cameraquest.com. Yes, you can buy Voigtlander front caps, but it would be hit or miss if they fit Leica lenses. And the rear caps would not fit since they're screwmount rear caps and Tim is talking about M-mount rear caps. For rear caps, pick up some Konica M-Mount rear caps. Much cheaper.

Oops. Let out a word. Meant to say:

And the Voigtlander rear caps would not fit since they're screwmount rear caps and Tim is talking about M-mount rear caps.

"M Rear Lens Cap, generic M mount rear cap, plastic, NOT made by Leica - 1 for $15, 3 for $40"

from the cameraquest.com web site - TRY HERE and scroll down some to find the cap listings.

I should have mentioned in prev. post I was talking rear caps - front caps are hit and miss because there are so many kinds and Leica has used so many front sizes on M lenses over the years (39mm, 46mm, 48mm, 49mm, 55mm, 60mm, at least). Might just as well get generic metal screw-in caps of the appropriate mm - if you want cheap.

I'm using $5, 40.5mm lens caps on both my 35/2 asph summi and 50/2 summi lenses which have 39mm threading. Works fine. :-)

I have a 46mm cheapie for my 28mm Summicron. 46mm caps are often on the cheap generic cap displays at camera stores because some video cameras use that size.

I found $10 used 39mm Leica caps at a local photo show/sale.
