Need ideas of what to do with farrowing house

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We will be moving in May to a new farm. There is a 30 sow farrowing house there. We have a few Tamworth pigs, but don't really have plans to raise very many. We do alot of dairy goats, so was wondering about trying to make part of it at least into a milk room, but don't know if that's practical. There are lots of other barns also, but I like to make the best use of everything. Anybody have any great ideas?

Thanks, Kim

How about sprucing it up with a bunch of bunkbeds and flowery wallpaper. Then advertise in a city newspaper for a farm adventure where the city dudes can help you with chores in exchange for the privilege of staying a weekend in an exciting country atmosphere -- for a small charge, of course.

Take the tin off the roof and make it a green house... 30 sow hog house would make a right nice little garage... install hanging rabbit cages and raise rabbits commercially- the cover is 1/2 the initial cost or there abouts... convert it over to stables, especially if there is pasture attached, and rent out stalls to horse owners- even in the country, such a facility sometimes does good, especially if there is room to ride, a round pen or two for training and lunge area... Buy used barrels or assorted sizes wholesale and storage them there until you sell them- people will come from far and wide to buy used barrels (a guy does this 40 miles south of here in an old chicken house of large size and I have traveled there on several occasions)... maybe a rental storage building, but alot would have to go into that (plus insurances) to make it fly

I kind of like your idea about a milk room. Also feed storage. And with all that natural heat from the animals, perhaps you could start spring seedlings.

Hey, I like your ideas guys. Let me know if you have anymore. You have certainly come up with some I hadn't thought of. Let me know if you come up with more.

Thanks, Kim
