Is it normal for a 3yr old neutered dog to get "excited"?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hate to start with an euphemism, but the correct word choice seemed alittle graphic. I'm asking because I'm concerned that something went wrong with the dog's neutering. I've always had female dogs for house pets so this is the first male dog we've had.

I won't get too descriptive, but let's just say that we suspect that the dog has an active imagination involving procreation.

How normal or not normal is this for a neutered dog?

Our neutered dog showed somewhat similar behavior for about a year after neutering. He's show signs of "excitement" if he was even brushed too long.

Patty--he was neutered at 5 months of age (and I wonder if they missed something?). The behavior isn't object or people focused. It started in the last year (right about full adult maturity--he's a large, 80lb dog) It seems to be triggered by his rolling, stretching on the ground. He has spasms and then fidgets around uncomfortably for 5-10 minutes. He appears confused by the whole thing.

When they took the testicles they didn't remove the sensitive nerve endings on and around the penis. Looks like he's found out what he can do with them. I don't think you'll get him to stop, nor do I really think it would be fair, and it might just confuse him. However, it would be reasonable to tell him "Outside" any time he starts this. After a while you won't even know it's going on any longer.

You will all have to excuse this answer. We had a german shepard once...a female. She was spayed, never had "procreated"...no carnal knowledge so to speak. She used to , um, lick herself until she would literally go into spasms humping the air. It was awful.

I had never seen a dog masturbate before her or since. We ended up giving her away. LOL

Moral of the story, I have no idea. Just know you arent alone out there! :0)

My Aussie was neutered at almost 5 months. He will be two in May. He occasionally starts 'hip thrusting' the air. No visible erection. I don't particularly like seeing it, but it apppears he can't help it and cannot control it. I just roll my eyes and feel embarrassed for him.

I have a thirteen year old dog who was neutered at eight months old. This dog will still chase after the lady dogs. I swear the female dogs look at him like he is nuts. He gets a quicky and then he is off being his little dog self again. You would think he would have learned years ago he wouldn't get anywhere.

We have a Yorkie male, who was neutered at 6 mos. He's now about 7 yrs old.

We adopted a female Yorkie, who had been severely abused (a puppy mill dog we suspect, but don't know for sure..it's a long story).

However, she has never been spayed, vet suspects she may be about 9-10 yrs old.

When she's in heat, the male gets in a lot of "floor play", a "piece of thigh"...but never gets around to the *real* thing. She's totally disgusted with him...but he does get *excited*......but it never lasts very long..a few minutes. (sigh)

I worked with a vet for a year. We had an elderly lady bring in her terrier who, although he had been neutered a while, was getting "excited" on her bed. After some checking and some x-rays, the vet realized that one of his testicles had not descended, so the vet who had neutered him had taken the dropped one, cashed the check and never said anything. We had to do a major operation to removed the testicle that had stayed in his abdomen. Just thought I'd mention this possibility.

Good luck, Laura

we tend to think that by neutering we will remove all sex drive from the animal , this is not so , having 3 male neutered dogs who occasionaly ... ummm play procreate... its a dominance thing, right now the lab mix is top dog, last month the boss of the "pack " was the elkhound....

the drive to reproduce is still there, its just not fertile.. my husky had a wonderful visit to a sweet female husky, she was in heat, and he tried to help her get puppies all weekend...he was happy, she was , annoyed ...

vets call it sexual acting out, and its fairly common, most folks just avert thier eyes, and perhaps feel a bit embarressed(not sure why on that part though)
