Raising bucket calves

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hey Ken thanks for the article last month in Countryside on raising baby calves on the bucket with the teats from McCarville Dairy Supply. That article is going to save me lots of bottle washing. I ordered the black rubber teats only, got a bucket at the deli and some hose at the hardware store and I'm set up. I've raised kids on a lambar but I had never seen the teats the size for a calf. Thanks again for passing this on.

I didn't even use the tubes. Just put in the nipples as close to the bottom of the bucket as possible and tilted it slightly towards them. I'm feeding a calf from my herd now. The cow's udders got so large it couldn't nurse. Seems to be doing OK but I am positive it didn't get colostrum. Bottle feeding for now, but will switch it over to the bucket with the hard rubber nipples asap.
