My Donkey mare is not being a lady right now.Help!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have had my Donkey mare for 5 years and we rairly even know when she is in heat. That is until we got our two intact male alpacas. They are just 9 mo old and don't have a clue yet but Debbie knows they are boys and two days ago she started trying to get their attention the donkey way so I had to separate them. usually she just ignores them and they share the same pastures. I would like to put them back together but I don't know if its safe yet.

That would certainly be an odd looking critter. Cute though, I bet.

Corky, We have the same thing going on in our pastures. It is quite funny to watch. I have never had the donkey actually do anything to hurt the llama just chase him around and try to "tell" him what to do. Our llama is BIG (385 lbs) compared to alpacas so I don't know what to tell you, I would watch them closely when you dare to put them back together....we call the would be off spring Llonkeys! Good Luck!

Emily, I think ours would be alpacadonks. I think they would look like long legged giant angora rabbits.

If no harm is being done I'd leave them alone. If there is, just separate the jenny until she's out of season. You realize this could become a monthly effort! -G-

If you plan on leaving the boys entire, it could become a problem when they mature and separate pastures may be needed.

My question was how many days do they stay in season. My guess is not very many as I am told they come in every 26 days .

It's spring , she may settled down shortly.

Your jenny will come into heat every 18-21 days.
