Hubby fell off a roof...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

My husband fell from a 9' roof yesterday. He landed on his back and was very lucky, nothing broken. I would like to make an herbal massage oil that will help with healing. I will be able to buy essential oils at the health food store but have no dried herbs. Can I use olive oil as the carrier? Thanks for your help! Amy

My goodness Amy! Glad he is OK although sore. I use warmed baby oil,add herbs, don't know if this is good or bad, but it seems to do the trick. Maybe it is more the lubrication and application of force to the muscles that does the good? Hope all is well, LQ

I've had success with castor oil packs on sore muscles. I soak a piece of felt cloth in castor oil, and apply it with a heated towel (wrapped in plastic)over it and then cover the whole thing with another thick towel to keep in warmth. Keep it on for about 20 minutes at a time. Good luck! Sounds like he's going to be sore for awhile, but lucky, huh!

See if you can find Tiger Balm at the health food store. Wonderful for sore muscles.

Wow..he was lucky! Yes, I do believe you can use it as the carrier. And believe it or not..just rubbing it in later will help alot. Good luck and I hope he heals soon.

Use sweet almond oil as your carrier oil and then add small amounts of your essential oil or infuse the warmed oil with natural herbs. Hope he is fine.

Olive oil is perfect, and good for the skin. I hope he got a scan, for internal lession. God Bless him. Ralph.

Hi, Amy. Yes, you can use olive oil as a carrier but I would prefer to use cold-processed, extra virgin. I highly recommend homeopathic Arnica montana taken orally along with using Arnica gel topically. We have seen amazing results with Arnica. Just last Wednesday my oldest son hit his little brother with an aluminum baseball bat on the side of his face by his eye (accidentally, he was trying to teach him how to swing the bat). He should have gotten a black eye. We used the Arnica immediately, both orally and topically, and again 15 minutes later. I think he had one more dose of the tablets about an hour later and we applied the gel a couple of more times. NO BLACK EYE!!! Not even a hint of a bruise!! The only mark he had was a small abrasion. You can't even see anything today. The oral dose will work better if used the first time within 15 minutes of the injury but with an injury such as your husband's he should still benefit from using it. Do not use the Arnica gel on broken skin. There is a combination homeopathic Sports Gel that is safe to use on damaged skin. I might even use both alternately since they have different healing properties. And make sure to ask the clerk at the health food store what they would suggest. They sometimes are able to tell you if one product is better than the others. Warm herbal soaks in the bath tub would probably help, too. Good luck!

OUCH...I would rub peppermint oil on after the massage. It is great for sore muscles, the natural "ben-gay" Works great for me after a long day of baling!!! Best to ya....

There ought to be a law about husbands and high places...but oh well...glad your's is ok...I would try some warm comfrey compresses. Make a very strong comfrey tea, dip in fabric (like diaper material) place it on affected area and top it with a dry towel. The Indians call comfrey "knit bone" and it has amazing healing properties. I don't know where you live, but mine is just now starting to show 4 inch shoots above the ground....I feel kinda lost when it dies back in the winter...Good luck with the hubby....Maybe he should try tying himself off to something the next time.....

Harmony, did you know you could freeze comfrey leaves for winter use? This year I'm going to infuse olive oil with comfrey leaves. That would be good, too for winter time.

Along with the massage, might I also suggest a half cup of Jagermesiter, taken internally of course, at a frequency of once per day, preferably in the evening. Jagermeister will immeadiately relax tight back muscles so they will heal faster and feel better.

Heck, I'd fall off the roof on purpose if I was promised an olive oil massage and some Jagermeister every night. That sounds pert near as good as......

Hello, I'm a lawyer and there just might be grounds for a settlement here. How about the ladder maker? Shingles unduly smooth? Neighbor distract you for a moment? Migratory bird flying over cause you to look away and slip? Somebody caused this. We can go after them. Email for more info and rates.

Thanks for all your advice, I'm off to the health food store now. He did have a CAT scan, they wanted to make sure his aorta was ok. He was pretty good this morning, stiff, but not real painful. Of course, he was at his desk, and by 2:00 was looking pretty rough. (Darn you men, anyway! Well, at least he stayed home!)I made him lay down for a while, although that just seems to make him stiffen up. I told him about the suggestion that he tie himself off next time, and he jokingly said "Well, then I'd just hang myself" :-), or :-( ? not funny, and probably true...And as for the 'sue-ing', he'd have to sue himself! Thanks again! Amy

Have you ever heard of a vinegar pack? My step daughter's grandpa told me about it swears it works. He says you soak a brown paper bag in vinegar and put it on where it hurts. He said sometimes he saran wraps it to his body. Can't hurt to try it.

Naw, the DH - you just tape him to the roof until he's done! None of that pesky gravity to worry about.
