I found a homestead! I found a homestead! Its in rural Alaska and its cheap and beautiful and very rural. There is a one room school near by and it sits on 5 acres...

I am a happy happy girl!!! Whoohoo!

I am probably way ahead of myself but this property seems incredible. :0)

Najia;

I don't want to burst your bubble but I lived in Alaska for 2 years and it isn't easy even with a good job and a large nest egg. Please do ALL your homework before you make the jump. It's a long way from anywhere.

God Bless!!!!

Good for you!! I hope it works out well for you. Good luck.

And remember too that there are bears everywhere (even in towns! I have a pen pal there that was telling me about them). Your gardening will be MUCH differant there and feed for animals is very expensive. But if those aren't a huge concern well...

I envy you! hugely. We wanted to go this spring but our research over the winter and the fact that we would go back into debt made us decide to stay after all. But I still dream of the beauty!

Congrats! What a great feeling! I think you are brave, too, considering Alaska. Kind of like the pioneers who went west so many years ago. I couldn't handle the weather. I feed my soul with gardening--I'm itchin' to get started NOW, I can't imagine having to wait until June! Keep us posted, and for the future, please set up a web site with lots of pictures! Amy

My brother has been living in Alaska (Kenai Peninsula near Soldotna) for almost 30 years. It's expensive and the winters are very, very long and dark. I think, other than his family, the cross-country skiing is what has kept him there. The summers are glorious. It's a place for young people and most natives are insensitive to the needs of the middle-aged and elderly. The interior is a very harsh climate but the SW coast is fairly mild, considering its latitude. It's a big step. You have to understand winter to stay there. Alaska is a place that draws in romantics and then destroys them. Be careful, be informed, and good luck.

Alaska is wonderful. We lived there for 14 years in various locations. The people are wonderful and the adventures fantastic.......it is a different planet but that is what makes it so unique. Where else can you see such majestic mountains, watch the salmon fill the creeks, have wildlife so near...it's part of the adventure. If we can help, please feel free to email us. We now live in the south but I'd rather face a bear or a moose, and I have, than a tornado anyday. There's freedom there we have found nowhere else. Great-Grandma Oh, yes, the elderly that we knew were treated with much love.

Dear Najia,

Congratulations! I live in AK and love it, but is practically a different country from the Lower 48. Feel free to pm me if you would like to chat.
