How fast will mane grow back? (horses)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hi everyone,

We bought a horse yesterday, and will be bring it home in 2 weeks. It's mane is about 6 inches long. I like the look of a horse with a long mane, so I am wondering how fast it will grow back. She is about 3 year old paint.

Thank you,

Betty Jo

It depends on the horse. They are like people, some grow lots of hair & some don't! My 20 yr olf appy mare's mane is LUCKY to be about 5 inches long & has not been cut or pulled. My 10 month old Morgan filly has about 8 inches of thick spiral curls that I'm sure are going to develop into a real long thick mane.

One trick is to wash & condition the hair then put into loose braids. This doesn't make it grow faster, but does help prevent it from getting broken off. Obviously, good nutrition helps too.

So right! Each horse is different. In the case of the Appy this is genetic. It is rare to find an appaloosa with a decent mane and tail. Genetics are fascinating! Stallions will, generally grow a much fuller mane and tail than mares(appy's are an exception). It is fun watching to see what they are going to look like and as mentioned above, good nutrition will let them "be all that they can be". There are some great articles and books out on this, you might enjoy reading them. They are so interesting! LQ

Some punks got into the pasture where I used to board my arabian and cut his mane off really short. This happened last spring and now his mane is about 8 inches long. It seems to take an eternity to grow back. I always wondered what he would look like with no mane, but I didn't really want to cut it off. It was really thick.

a lot of show folks in rodeo do this, and in fact there are even "code cuts" to tell you what kind of bit and what kind of horse you got, ie , two tufts means cow horse/snaffle bit.....

its called roaching, youre actually lucky , if your paint has good QH lines, should only take about 5-6 months before it gets nice and long , but keep it braided, and only gently finger comb it , and will be fine, i have a paint mare that looks like a show mane (meaning filler hair) , she just grows it long naturally .

betty jo, as others have mentioned-it depends on the horse. we had 2 full brother Morgan horses. one had a long beautiful mane and tail- the other had a short, scraggly looking mane and tail. that's just the way it goes. it may not ever get longer.

I was wondering the same thing. We bought a pair of morgan colts. they were being kept at an Amish families place and the teenage boy who was freindling them cut there manes clean off. That is the way they do theirs but no one knows why he did it to someone elses without asking. Any way, thier dad has the most gorgous mane! So i was anxious to see how/when they would grow out!

For those of you with Morgans, in general they tend to have lots of long thick hair. Many even have curly hair. Obviously there are exceptions to this. As I mentioned above, my appy mare has very little mane. OTOH, her tail is super long, thick, and silky! It's a beautiful color too...jet shiney black with silver highlights thanks to the appy genetics.
