A quote about "Enough"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

"Enough was a roof that didn't leak. Plenty of chairs on the porch and at the table... Enough was food and safety from the elements...enough was a little help for a friend in need, and debt to no one. There is something perverse about more than enough. When we have more we never have enough. It is always somewhere out there, just out of reach. The more we acquire, the more elusive enough becomes." -Dot Jackson

You reminded me of a book that my husband & I have read many times - we keep it around to browse through every once in a while to remind ourselves what is 'enough.'

Living More With Less by Doris Janzan Longacre

Check it out! I KNOW you will like it! ;)

I think I have read it several years ago. Is it a cookbook too? I would love to own it!!

Yes, I love you quote Melissa. We're at the point now of "If we can't eat it, we don't need it." That started last year when we started cleaning out our house after living here 14 years and thinking back then last summer, that we may have made a move. We stayed and I am glad. Anyway, we have enough! I have both the More With Less, cookbook and Living More With Less. The cookbook is my favorite and I too reread the Living More With Less periodically to keep me focused. Enjoy the weekend!

Somwone once ask MR. Rockefeller how much is enough and his reply was "just a little bit more"

Here's my rendering of this wonderful quote:

Enough

Enough is a roof that doesn't leak,
Some chairs on the porch to rock in peace,
Enough is food to last the week,
And shelter from the sudden storm's caprice.

Enough is a willing help for friends in need;
To pay with cash and stay out of debt;
Enough is a book to enjoy and read,
A mangy mut for a loyal pet.

There's something perverse about more than enough,
A little bit more, just out of reach;
The urge to acquire a little more stuff
Attempts to bridge the fatal breach.

Enough is the answer to human greed,
The will to content onself with less;
Enough discerns twixt want and need;
Enough abounds to turn and bless.

Very nice Randal. I will copy it into my book next to the original.
