chicken question!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Okay...I was gonna ask this question over on CS, but I'm rather apprehensive of the "sarcastic" answers I might receive. I have two roosters...one is a bantam cochin and the other is a mille fleur bantam. Both kinda small!! My hens are all either barred rocks, buff orpingtons or araucanas. All standard size! What are the chances of these two little bantam roosters fertilizing any of these hens?? Maybe at least the smaller araucanas? I know that they're trying, but I want to set some eggs in my incubator and I don't want to end up with "rotten" eggs. What do you all think?? Thanks, everyone!!

Marcia, I just don't know! I'd say probably they could; but I'm not sure just what you'd end up with. If you click on Lusenet, way down toward the bottom of their list of forums is one called The Chicken Zone Q&A; they have a lot of questions like this and they all get answered without a lot of sarcasm. (I'll be checking to see what the answer is if you post your question!)

Marcha, I would say if they are trying then th deed is probablt done. god for it.

I don't think it will happen. I had a silkie bantie rooster with my standard hens. He was very attentive and protective but he was just too small. Similar to putting a pony stud in with mares. Gets their cycle going but they are save from being bred.

Polly...I took your advice and posted this question at the Chicken Zone (didn't even know there was such a place!!). I REALLY should take the time and check out the other Lusenet forums :-)!! I sure do like Tren's response, but I think Susan is probably right...these little guys are trying their darndest, but it's doubtful that they're making the "connection"!!

Marcia, If you open your eggs, can you see a small white, round spot on the yoke? I don't mean the white stringy stuff that holds the yoke to the shell, I mean if your egg is fertilized, you will see a definite spot on the yoke. It looks kind of like a little round, clear sticker. If you see this, then they are reaching your hens.

I opened one of my eggs to show to some city slickers and they got grossed out by it and wouldn't eat the eggs. People are funny.

Dee...yup, I should have thought of that! I KNEW that's what that little round dot meant!! Having one of those "senior" moments here, I guess :-)!
