My hubby has had two back surgeries(sp).my question is ,are the augers that go on the three point power pack worth the money? our land is rock,so will the auger bite in or will it just sit on top of the ground?

How many post holes do you need? Are the rocks small, egg to fist size? Larger rocks must dealt with by hand. Compare your needs for hand labor to the cost of a machine.

Like the other poster said if its egg to fist size rock it will do ok. We have never drilled a fence post hole but use the auger quite often. When we set out sixty trees in a new orchard, layed out where the trees would go marked the spots with a little spray orange paint, just a burst, drove the tractor over drilled the hole, enlarged if nessarry and the whole thing was done in an day. Bought ours at a farm auction for 100 dollars been worth every dime.

How many post holes will you dig in the life of the post hole digger? Post hold diggers range in price from $350 to $1000 plus the auger cost $200-$500 depending on size needed. Even on the low side $550 is a lot of money to be spending if you only need a few holes dug. Would it be cheaper to hire out the work? Would it be cheaper to rent? Depending on how large the rocks are on your land will determine if the auger is going to be usable. If the rocks will fit between the auger blades then your ok. If its larger you may have problems.
