The author gives good ideas on the down fall of Rome. I agree with his ideas and would like to add something extra. Rome was a big empire in the ancinent world. They were lucky to hold on to their terrotories without modern technology. The communicated ny horseback and letters. It probably took a month or longer to get information across the whole empire. Rome had to keep a standing army around its terrotories; this meant they had to pay their soldiers. With so many enemies attacking the empire you have to figure that it came a time that Rome could no longer pay the army and went broke.

They didnt collapse so much because of losing wars as rotting from within. Endless bad emperors and civil wars forced the waring factors to give bonuses to their armies and they expected more. This lead to slacking disicple and they couldnt win anymore because of this.

The Roman Empire originated in a small city on the Tiber River, called Rome. At first they called themselves the Roman Republic. Later, after the Senate passed a truth-in-advertising law, they started calling themselves the Roman Empire.

The biggest factor in its growth was that the Romans were very good at starting wars on their next door neighbors and then winning them. They were the complete package. They hit for power, had good fielding and base running skills, and most amazing of all, they batted about .975 !

Sometimes they didn't even need to fight, because their neighbor would just say, "What the hell! Why get the stuffing knocked out of us?" and give in. This is the origin of the saying: If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

The downfall of the Roman Empire came when they stopped winning almost all their wars. But, because they still won almost as many wars as they lost, the downfall took a l-o-n-g time.
