Albatros Island

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

I received a response that Albatros Island may have been Alcatraz during the Civil War. John was asked me to post some information about my Great Grandfather and he would try to provide more informaiton. My Great Grandfather was Harvey P. Gray, who enlisted at Mokelumne Hill, Calaveras County, in Company H, Eighth Regiment, California Volunteers under colonel Woods. Any more information you can provide me would be greatly appreciated.

Company "H" of the 8th Regiment, California Volunteer Infantry, was organized in Calaveras County and mustered in February 27, 1865, at San Francisco. The company was stationed at Alcatraz Island and Fort Point until October, 1865. The unit never went back to the East Coast battlefields. Also posted to the island during that period were companies E, G and M.

For more information, I suggest you contact the California Military Museum at http://www.militarymuseum.org/

Good luck!

Phillip,

On a related topic, there are very few personal records for men stationed on the island during the Civil War. I'm sure the National Park Service historians would love to see you ancestor's military records.
