rye hay ok for milkers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

H everyone, I'v not ever posted before but I love this forum. I have 2 milkers (a saanen and a La Mancha - my favoite breed btw), a nubian dry yearlng, a La Mancha doeling, her friend a saanen wether and a pygmy (the horses friend). I have a chance to get some ry hay for a very reasonable price and need toknow if it's good for or ok for goats and the horse to eat before I buy it. It is this years hay, as a matter of fact still on the ground. My boss cut it on Friday and will bale it tomorrow if it doesn't rain on it. If it rains, I won't be taking it and it'll go to the cows. Lots of folks feed rye grass out our way. Most of it is a mixture, but right now with the goats eating hay that is 9 months or more old, some nice green hay sounds nice! I am not sure what it will do for milk production in that it isn't high in calcium or protein. The girls will quickly tell you if they like it or not! Vicki
