greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I'm planning on staying in Maryland for Vacation. I don't like to be packed in like sardines. Was wondering if anyone would reccomend a place. A place on the water or very close. 1 bedroom with pull out couch. Very simple people with alot of energy. We like to do basically everything. Thanks James

Where in Maryland? By "on the water", do you mean the bay or the ocean?

We like to go to SWALLOW FALLS ST PARK.Its in Garret county MD.Its a beautiful area if u just want to get away from it all.Deepcreek lake is nearby if u like the water, really big lake, but is a bit to busy for me.Western MD. is a lovely area with lots of nice secnery.

Any body of water would be nice. Ocean would be the best so my little one can sit in the sand and play..Thanks James

James, have you been in this area before? If I were taking a vacation to Maryland. . . . . I would make sure to stop by Gettysburg. It is breathtaking in it's simplicity. Avoid the intown commercial areas, just get on the road and drive around the battlegrounds. If you can't see the soldiers lying behind the stone battlements, or see the puffs of smoke bouncing off the rifles and cannons, you won't be looking close enough. It is, without a doubt "hallowed ground". You don't have to be a civil war buff to "feel it". If you are a Civil War buff, than you will think you died and joined the troops in heaven when you land here! You have the battlefields around Harper's Ferry, Antietam is near Hagerstown, and many other smaller and lesser known fields/parks all within roughly a half-hour of the city of Frederick, increase the drive time to less than an hour, and you can even take Stan to Virginia. And leave him there. LOL! ( I've been noticing all your Md remarks Stan the ma

If you like fresh water, the person who suggested Garrett county in Western Md., is on target. Beautiful country.

If you get this close to Wash DC and haven't been to the Vietnam Vets memorial. . . . think of adding it as a day trip. It will be a visit you will never forget.

I don't like salt water so I'm at a loss to make suggestions to meet your sand dreams, but the entire eastern border of Maryland is mostly coast line.

James, I live on MD's Eastern Shore, about 20 minutes from the beach. If you don't like crowds, stay away from Ocean City in the summer time. If some time at the ocean is what you're looking for, I'd consider Chincoteague Island, Virginia, home of the infamous Pony Swim. It's just over the MD-VA border, and it's got wild ponies on the beach, all kinds of wildlife in the Assateague State Park, the beach is really nice, and it's a quaint little town. It's where I always go when I need some beach time to get away.

Camp at Cape Henlopen State PArk.

Ditto what Fran said.

Also, consider the Potomac River. There are biking and walking paths along the old canal route. They are actually the old towpaths. Harper's Ferry is in WV but just over the MD line and has the paths, the river, old buildings etc...

Judy, you do know Gettysburg is in PA? I like the tower beaches between Ocean City and the inland area.

I'm agreeing with Fran.

Ocean City is a spit of land jambedpacked with buildings and tarred roads. And the people are packed in their like sardines. Most everyone who seeks a "quieter" beach setting go a bit further down the coast line to Chicoteage(sp). Have a friend who takes their family and spends every week-end downthere. They absolutely love it!

Something else you might consider - the beaches in Delaware. They tend to be not quite as crowed as MD's. But as someone else mentioned - be prepared for crowds no matter where you oo if you're vacationing at a beach area in the prime time of the year.

Sorry-Cape Henlopen SP is in Delaware. I am often geographically challenged ;).

I think I would the Garrett county State Parks because it will be coolest there.

Ocean City is cool on the boards at night, and the crowds are well behaved on the boardwalk. Understand that I feel the risk of harm is low there- even at 3 am. 2 miles of ocean boardwalk to cycle on til 10 am.

Hi James, I am a Eastern Shore of Md girl also and I say Chinchoteaque Island, like Fran, my neighboor. Hi Fran!!! It is so quaint and the ponies are there, the beaches aren't that bad (crowds) and I love it. You MUST go to the Island Creamery and get Marsh Mud Ice cream, only if you like chocolate. LOL. Okay, that is my vote. Karoel

ABSOLUTELY only Eastern Shore...ah peace and quiet. Just make sure you are withing walking distance to those great (sigh I miss them) crab cakes.
