Monsanto is at it again!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I just learned as of 4:30pm this afternoon that people from Monsanto are meeting with our Tribal Council. As I understand it, Monsanto wants to buy up our Wild Rice seeds!! Now what could they be up to?? As some of you know, I live on an Indian Reservation in Northern WI. We have one of the biggest wild rice fields in the state. As members of the tribe, we have rights to harvest the wildrice in the fall. It is one of our main foods. I learned a little about Monsanto on the homesteading sites and now plan to learn more since it hit close to home. I'll keep you posted on what's happening around here. This is too scary!!!

Jean I live between three reservations and we have loads of wild rice. I don't know how much of it is anything other than wild but it is harvested by the tribes and sold to help make money. I wonder if they are comeing here next. I agree it is very scary!

I hope your council will resist the temptation to "make a deal" with this company. I have heard NOTHING good about them that is for sure.

Pretty soon we won't be able to grow anything that isn't "approved"!!!! Did you all hear about them wanting to TAX gardeners on the value if the produce they grow???????????? AS IF!!!!

When ever I hear that companys name I want to groan! I've never heard anything good about them either. This year Most of the seeds that I've ordered were non-hybrid from a company that does not do buisness with Monsanto- (pinetree seeds) and I'm planning to try to save as many as I can, plus I'm very interested in seed banks. This trully worries me. These folks are up to no good!

Whatever they are up to they won't tell you or they will out and out lie. It will be hard to find the lie as Monsanto like many others believes the best way to tell a lie is to wrap it in layers of truth. The must think they can eventually control the wild rice market. This should be hard to do since wild rice unlike all other grains is grown from the seeds not harvested that fall into the water, rather than the seeds that are harvested and replanted. Good luck

On short wave radio, where you get the real news, They have talked about monsanto, And who ever has control of the food and seeds, will rule the world. Of course they are talking about this global one world government and the U N , and they are on fast track now. I fear for our farmers, If the only place they can buy seed is from Monsano, And the seed is genetically changed,Then the farmers are in deep trouble, and so are we. I have been buying seed, Non hybrid. Also trying to learn how to harvest seed, And that is a whole new ball game. Did you know that if you don"t keep cucumbers and squash a long long ways apart they will cross polinate, and then the seed is no good. And corn the same way. If you planted to varietys you would have to keep them a long ways apart. And the book I am reading is really thick. so you can see how complex this would be.

My husband is 1/2 native american and this week-end we are going to the first pow-wow for the season I'll ask around and see if anyone else has heard anything about Monsanto and what they may be up to, but you are right is doesn't sound good. To me wild means just that growing naturally and reseeding itself every year. We love wild rice and I have some handwritten recipes that my husbands mother wrote using it and adding it to things. Really good stuff.

Why can't people let well enough alone ??? Sally
