Rice will cook faster and be perfect everytime if you boil your rice rather than steaming it. Fill a pot with water (at least 4-5 times the water to rice). Toss in the rice, some salt, and a pat of butter or olive oil and stir. Bring to a full rolling boil and reduce heat the heat a little so it is gently boiling (boiling - not simmering) until done. Drain through a colander and serve.

I know that some out there might have a microwave, but I have found that doing at least 1 to 1 1/2 cups of rice in a microwave-safe bowl with a lid works well for me. I cook it about 17 minutes and then check it. If it needs a little more time (depending on the power of your microwave oven) I can add minutes then. Last time, I did 1 1/2 cups of rice, 3 cups of water, butter, herbs and spices for 17 + 3 minutes and it was just perfect.
It doesn't seem to work well for smaller amounts of rice, probably just need to reduce the cooking time accordingly, I guess.

Karen, my family will only eat rice cooked this way. People always ask how I get my rice so fluffy and separated into indiv. grains, I tell them to cook like you are cooking pasta.

I cook my rice this way and it always turns out great...my tip to add is: leave the lid on the whole cooking time(15-20 minutes as Karen said)...don't check on it and don't peek in, don't let any of that nice hot air out, that's what helps get the rice nice and fluffy.

This may sound odd but it always works - put your rice in a pot and put enough water over it until the water is up to the first joint in your finger when your finger is touching the rice below. Give it a stir - put it on to boil - once boiling turn the stove off and let it sit for about ten minutes - it will be perfect and there will be no need to drain.
