Alpahbet Cooking- H is for Ham

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Tell us all of your ideas for using ham. I love to bake a big ham, then package it in small amounts to use for various dishes. I am out of small packages right now, but I do have 3 big hams in the freezer. So I need to get one out and cook it.

Also give any ideas for how you baste your hams when they are baking. I like to place candied apple slices on mine, and baste it with the juice from them. I can a lot of these each year and they are especially good with ham.

I like to toast homemade bread in the skillet with a little butter, then put a fried egg, slice of cheese and slice of ham between two slices of toast. Yum! and portable, too!

I like to make ham salad. I use ham that I zip throught the food processor, add some mayo, some mustard, a lot of homemeade relish, (sometimes I use sweet, sometimes pepper relish) and some chopped onion and red peppers if Ihave them. This makes a very good sandwich. I like it in pitas too.

Another use of leftover ham is for ham, green beans, and potatoes, scalloped potatoes and ham, or potato soup...

Melissa, I made some peach jam last summer and it didn't set up well at all. I hate to throw anything away so I kept it. I had been using it for sweet and sour sauce until the other day. I had to bake a large ham for a dinner and I put a whole jar of the peaches with the thick juice on the ham. I let it set in fridge over night and baked it the next day. It was absolutly great. I cut mine thick for ham stake that I can also serve for breakfast with eggs, grits etc... and I shave alot for sandwiches. This time I also chopped finely quite a bit for ham salad sandwiches. I love sandwiches in this weather and it's fast and easy!God Bless

I think ham is perfect when basted with fruit. I can peaches and honey every year (kind of like applesauce, but with peaches and honey instead of apples and suga...) and now you gave me the idea to use it on the ham. I also like pineapple on it, and apricot jam...
