Potatoes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Style Homesteading : One Thread

Last year we had a bumper crop of potatoes, not much else did great, bad year here. We were at a different place. I planted deep and hilled up a few times. Got over eight bushels for my efforts I'm trying two different methods this year. The Eliot Coleman way- about 3 inches deep then heavy mulch when they break ground.
And laying them on the ground and putting a very heavy mulch on them right away. Already had to replant some that way, wind blew the straw off and they froze big time. Have you used these methods, what were the results, suggestions? Thanks

I did the shallow and mulch way 2 years ago w/ good results. I should try that lay 'em on the ground and muclh method as I don't have much of a garden worked up here yet. Glad you posted this.

I tried the lay them on the ground and mulch method two years ago, and the thing I got the bumper crop of was snakes! Okay, well maybe it was only two or three, but I will plant mine in dirt from now on! I'll suffer with lower yields if I have to!
