Baby hospitalized after ingesting meth

Spokane police say an infant taken to an area hospital Thursday morning had ingested methamphetamine.

The boy's mother took him to the hospital when she became concerned about his movement, police said.

The infant was transferred to another hospital, and a physician said urine samples showed the baby had a "considerable amount of meth" in his system, said police spokesman Dick Cottam.

Police immediately turned the baby over to Child Protective Services. The baby remains hospitalized in satisfactory condition, police said.

The amount of meth in its body did not appear to be life-threatening. An investigation is under way at the infant's home on East Liberty, police said.

Police are not disclosing the name of the mother, Cottam said.

In MY day, everybody, I mean EVERYbody knew that amphetamines were A Bad Thing. Yeah, sure, some took them to get through finals but it was a temporary thing. Now we have people with little kids making or doing the stuff.

Don't know why I'm surprised--it's not at all unusual to hear on the scanner of an ambulance being called for a toddler who's ingested straight bleach from a cup the mother left on the washer.
