Did you feel the earthquake?????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

WOW! That was exciting! I had been up reading my email but had JUST got back in bed when the bed started moving around 6:50 am ;-o Soon the whole house was moving and all the glass jars were jangling together. It seemed to last a looooooong time. Anybody else feel that? It's causing quite the stir in Vermont.

Experts are saying the epicenter is 17 miles southwest of Plattsburgh, NY and a 5.1

-- Peace and Carrots Farm, Vermont (wsm311@aol.com), April 20, 2002.

Nope, didn't feel a thing out here in the southwest.

What?!!! We're down here in Southern VT, and I didn't feel a thing!! Where are you?!! The last time I felt any tremors from an earthquake was waaay back when I was about 11yrs old! We're right down near the border to Mass, by the way.. Neat!!

I live in an underground house 12 miles north of Montpelier, Vermont. It's the second strongest earthquake I have ever felt. My daughter ran outside to make sure her house was OK. She just finished building it.

Yes we felt it here in Kingsbury, NY. Couldn't figure out what it was, thought at first it was the rock quarry down the street, but its Saturday and they are closed!

Wow. Our first earthquake.

Yupper Eastern Ontario, though it wasn't a biggie at all here.

Felt it here in Brasie Corners, NY The dogs went nuts. At first, I couldn't figure out what it was, but then figured it must have been an earthquake. Used to live out west, and felt some tremors out there, this was the strongest, and longest, I've felt

I felt it down here in the southern tier just east of Binghamton,NY. I was having a cup of coffee and all of a sudden the walls started to move. Haven't felt one like it since 1974 in West Va.

Yes, we felt it here in Rensselaer Co. NY (about 30 miles north of Albany). I was in the cellar putting in a load of laundry...thought the three kids all got up at the same time and were running upstairs. The cabinets shook also and things on top of the refrigerator were tinkling together. I found more infomation at wnyt.com (channel 13 here). Last earthquake here in NY was 1983.

Felt two strong tremors here in southern Vermont last year. Must have slept thru this one! I'm just over the Mass. border in Halifax.

The USGS places it as having occurred in New York State. http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/cgi-bin/finger?quake@gldfs.cr.usgs.gov

I woke up to my bed shaking and things clanging together on my dresser. I tought it was a huge truck going by.

-- george nh (rcoopwalpole@aol.com), April 20, 2002.

I feel the earth move under my feet. Reports from NCPR indicate at least some minor road damage in the area. Glad to say we had no damage in Wevertown, N.Y. other than a stone wall in a local cemetery had a partial collapse.

Here in Hudson Falls, NY (about 2 1/2 hours south of Plattsburgh), our 95 year old home was vibrating! The asbestos shingles on the house were shaking and the husband said the car was shaking in the driveway.

Didn't feel a thing here in NePa. I'm in lower Susquehanna County and I feel like I missed something!

No, not here.

-- Buddy in e Ga. (Buddybud@csranet.com), April 20, 2002.

On Friday, we had one here! Felt it mostly in the upper northern part of Arizona. Sissy

Nothing happened here in the Penobscot Bay area of Maine.

-- Marcia (HrMr@webtv.net), April 20, 2002.

I slept thru it here in NY, but my cousin in Pittsfield VT (near Killington) said it was unreal! She said the weird sound was worse than the shake, the neighbors all ran out of their houses thinking somebodys furnace or gas tank had exploded, then realised that their own houses and the ground were still shaking. Creepy.

Was at the farm south of Buffalo and felt a slight rumble but nothing anyone worried about.

I must sleep like a log. I didn't feel a thing. My Mom did though.

I was outside at the chicken coop and didn't notice anything. Hubby was still in bed and noticed the windows rattling. He thought it might have been a quake - sure enough. Not like the one we had New Year's Eve 1999. What a way to welcome in the new millenium. We had just finished burning the outhouse as our way to celebrate, everyone settled in bed and WOW!! A fairly substantial quake too.

Yes, we sure felt it. I live in an underground home, complete with a sod roof & woke up to the roar of what sounded like a tornado but the shaking told us something different was going on. I have never experienced anything like it. Of course soon after, we found that the epicenter was about 13 miles NW of us just outside of AuSable Forks..just over the ridge from my grandsons. I live near the hamlet of Upper Jay. I have a huge heatsink/ chimney/fireplace structure in the middle of the house....5' sq. at the base and tapering up to 3' as it exits the roof and the outside chimney is 2' square...This heatsink is built on a 6' deep footing and even then, we got bits of loose concrete all over the floor, with the usual pictures& misc. moved around. The only real damage we found (we hope) was the the attached underground garage which was added after the main house and built with concrete blocks, has some hairline cracks along the seams. I saw where both Rt 9N and a backroad nearby it were caved in. In AuSable Forks, both old churches have substancial cracks that is preventing their use. One thing I see, is that Big Brother arrived in the area..you'd think there was a massive emergency..FEMA & Red Cross...wanting you to contact them so they can get their nose in your business...you'd be surprised how many people are out there willing to suck at the government tit and yet complain about their privacy.
