Trading Spaces

Is anyone else as addicted to this TLC show as I am? Do you watch for ideas, or just to look at Ty, the hot carpenter? Who's your favourite designer?

I like to watch Trading Spaces because some of the design ideas they come up with are pretty nifty, and I know most of them shop at Ikea, so I could probably replicate it myself. My favorite designer is Vern, the Asian guy. I like his clean lines and Zen way of design. My second favorite is the red-headed girl, whose name escapes me at the moment. If I were ever on that show, I'd want to be on the old guy's team. He just seems so happy, and I love how he paints little country things on everything.

I am addicted enough to this show to know that the redhead is Lari (and she's from Mississippi) and the old guy is Frank (who is NOT gay, but actually married and lives with his wife in Texas). I like Frank's personality, but not his designs, which are too country/artsy- craftsy for me. I think Vern does such clean work because he's also a trained architect, and sees things more linearly. He has done a couple of rooms I haven't been crazy about, though. My least favorite designers are Doug and Hilda, because I don't think that either of them ever pay attention to what the homeowners want, but just do their own thing instead. My favorite rooms tend to be ones done by Genevieve, because I like the way she uses natural wood and always has a lot of light and calm colors in her rooms.

So yes, I'm addicted. I watch every weekday at 3 p.m. Some days I have to be at work at four, so I have to tape the last ten minutes of the show. The reveal is the best part, so it's worth it. I like it when they love the room so much that they cry. That's neat.

I think I've seen pretty much every episode, so if you'd like to reference a room you liked, I'm sure I'd know which one you were talking about. I, for example, liked the room Genevieve did for the young actor and his wife. She called it aqua something or other. It was the one where Doug did the friends' apartment, and made it look like something out of a Target ad -- all red and white with weird patterns.

I'm not sure exactly why I watch, since it makes me want things I can't afford. It gives neat ideas, and I like that. I also like watching Ty. I just read a review of the show in a magazine, and it's described as a "cult favorite." Sweet. I'm in a cult now.

(Shh. Don't tell anyone, but Tim watches too. He likes Vern the best.)

I agree with you about Doug and Hilda. They don't seem to care about whatever the homeowner wants. I also love how whenever someone suggests something to Hilda, she gives them the snottiest look and says, "Yeah, but who's the designer?" Doug is kind of scatterbrained, like he took a big hit off something before coming to the house.

That's because Doug is a flaming queer. Gay Brian told me so.

I am not ashamed to say that I do, in fact, watch Trading Spaces, although not as religiously as Jaimee. Vern is my favorite, followed closely by Frank. I believe that all interior decorators are either women or gay, since straight men don't care enough to decorate their homes with anything other than beer cans and porn magazines.

RE: Tim's answer

Or computer parts, if you're my exboyfriend. I'd bet you have a couple dead hard drives laying around your place too, Tim.

I'm a straight man and I like to 'decorate' with IKEA-teki stuff yet don't furnish with beer cans and pornos. I don't even have extra computer parts laying around. What category does that drop me into?

Do you have bike parts laying around, or biking gear? I think that would be the equivalent to their computer parts.

Yep, Vern and Doug are definitely gay. And Frank is gay, too, but in the closet. The gaydar is never wrong...

Well...I can answer your question. I am not addicted to Trading Spaces. I watch it mainly for Ty and Vern. I love just watching them walk around the spaces. =) As far as Frank goes, he IS married, but I am afraid he is a big old girl in secret. Laurie and Gen are awesome. Doug is a very bitter old queen and Hildy does not care about anything but looking good all the time (which she doesn't). All in all, the show is awesome and Paige does a good job. Any questions for me?
