New To Goats

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

Hi, I think it's great that there is a place to have goat questions answered by people who have and care about goats. It seems that many vets don't want to bother with goats, especially if they are "just" pets. I've gotten lots of great info from the archives. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions so...if anyone's willing to offer advise, that will be great. Here's the first one. What do I do about scurs?

Hi, and welcome! For scurs that are loose or very small, I put the animal up on the milkstand, heat up the disbudding iron really hot, cut off the scur short to the head, and reburn the area, sometimes it works other times though it doesn't completely go away it does help. On a really large scur, get a file, file a groove in the bottom of the scur all the way around, and slide elasatator rings over it, several of them, now cover them in duct tape. The whole thing will fall off flat in a couple of weeks, we are doing this to a buck at the place right now. Here is a site to look at. http://www.skybusiness.com/goatscanada/index91.html
