For an elegant answer, you might look at one of the editions of Michael Wertheimer's A Brief History of Psychology, which has sections on both of those issues. It would take a book to answer your question, so I hope you'll narrow it down a bit.

One of the best accounts of the difference can be found in J. O'Donnell's book _The Origins of Behaviorism_.
