2 year old doe with triplets - very little milk

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

We have a two year old doe that kidded Saturday. She is a Nubian and was a very good milker last year. Raised one big buck. Had a huge bag prior to kidding this year. She had triplets and hasn't got enough milk for one, I have been suplementing all of them while leaving them with the doe. Will she have milk in the next day or so for all these little guys? She doesn't seem sick. What could be the problem? Kids are thin and hungry, always crying except after each suplement from me- three times a day (9 oz.) or less if they lose intrest in the bottle. Then I figure they are full. I am fairly new to goats so I would appreciate any info or sugestions. Thanks

Could it be that she has mastitis? Although, to be honest, she should be tested for CAE, because freshening with a hard udder and very little milk is a symptom. If you test for CAE, have your vet send the blood sample to WSU for the ELISA test. The AGID test is not as accurate.

Lisa, along with the information from Rebekkah, alot of does with huge udders have edema in them. Leave the kids on to nurse it our, and hopefully they will soon not want the bottles from you and will be nursing their mom out. Next year try lowering the protein in the grain mix, especially if you are feeding alfalfa. Also lowering the amount of molassas in the feed. Though you would have to save it to feed to the babies the first 12 hours, also milking her out ahead of time will also help her udder from getting so congested. I hope you are not dealing with CAE. Another gal I have been helping on the internet with all the same problems in all her does, just got her results back in and everyone was positive. What a shame! Vicki

Brandon- two year old usually have twins, especially if it's their very first time. Most does who have tripleets also have the milk to go along with it, due to increased levels of hormones during the pregnancy. But- if they have triplets and can't feed them all, then take one kid from each set and either sell it, eat it (if a buck), or bottle feed it. I try to get rid of a buck in a set of triplets ASAP and leave the doe kids on their mother so they grow better. Chances are your girls will do fine though. :-)

Why not? They're really good, a lot like lamb or venison but without the gamey flavor of either, especially if you eat them while young and tender (2-6 months old is best).
