[ot] Mom back in the hospital

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Current News - Homefront Preparations : One Thread

Just wanted to ask that you keep my Mom in your thoughts and prayers.

She was admitted to the hospital again yesterday. Now it seems like she has protein in her urine. They are searching for the cause, but it is either her heart or her kidneys. She has gained at least 42 pounds of fluid weight (actually probably more because she hasn't been eating), and is very swollen.

Thanks,

apoc

apoc, it's been a few days. Have they been able to stabilize her?

Brooks,

Currently, the simple answer is NO.

They still can't get blood from her veins, the blood that they need to perform the tests to see why the protein is in her kidneys. I suggested to mom that they try to get it from her fingers. They tried and did get enough for one test. The test was inconclusive as of the moment. Her doctor called in a kidney specialist. He wants her to lose 40 lbs of fluid weight by Monday morning. As of yesterday, she had only lost 1 pound. I spoke to her this morning, and she said her doctor had told her this morning that she now has lost 12. The kidney doctor told her that "if you live long, you'll have to go on dialysis(sp)". My question is "please define live long". He had said that he thought her kidneys were working at only 20%-30%. To me, it sounds like it would be good to start her on it now. She has been on a catheter since she has been in, and I know being on one for that long isn't so good. Currently, there are no plans to remove it until at least Monday and then only if she has lost the 40 lbs.

That's the lastest, and to me it doesn't sound to good.
