Just curious. When was the first issue of Countryside?

My oldest copy is 57:1 published in 1973. The title is Countryside and Small Stock Journal even back that far.

Thanks Ken! I hadn't seen that yet. I usually devour the entire issue the day it arrives, but life's been busy, so I'm taking it in bits and pieces! Sure would like to have an entire set of all the issues. Jan

Judy, My oldest copy is 57-4 so you have me beat but Yours may be the first published by jd because he was on his first homestead then I think and he bought the mag. from someone else. He kept the title. It had been around quit a while before he got it I beleive.

The first issues of Countryside started out in newsletter format. Basically Jd put an ad in TMEN asking how to smoke bacon. A fair number of people contacted him asking to let them know also, so he, if a education and background in publishing, started the newsletter. It was named Countryside after their Countryside Print Shop. After it was printed, it would be put on the kitchen table and the family would march around the table assembling it. It eventually grew in magazine format. Jd eventually bought out Small Stock Journal, from which comes the name of Countryside and Small Stock Journal. It is actually maintained as two separate publications, just jointly published. That is why they sued the Hearst Corporation when they came out with the slick, yuppie Countryside. That one lasted about a year. However, the Belangers had a problem with people hearing that Countryside had folded and throught it was theirs.

I'll ask Dave when the very first issue of Countryside was published.

Ken

The first number of the publication number is the volume number. The second number of the publication number is the issue number.

In other words, I have a 1996 Countryside mag that indicates it is volume 80-4, which means that the first year of publication was 80 years ago or 1916, and the number 4 indicates it is the fourth issue produced in 1996.

The volume number should indicate the year of publication for any magazine, newspaper, etc.

The first issue of Countryside was printed in the fall of 1969. 200 copies on a single 12 x 18 sheet folded in quarters. By 1971 we were up to 40 pages 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, six times per year. Don't know the press run, but probably still around 200 copies. I have that copy in front of me. Fascinating. Some good info, no ads and $3 per year. I don't know what the postage cost was then, but I'm sure I miss the good old days!

In 1973 Countryside became a corporation and merged with Small Stock Journal, acquired from the recently widowed Mrs. Wallace Blair.

We've come a long way, baby.

Thanks very much Ken. You know? It would be great if you could somehow print some of those old ones to sell. I know I would buy them. I love the old ones. They bring back memories of A time when the young adults were trying to save a culture they feared we might loose forever. We wont. There will always be people like that who care.

Thank you Ken and Thank you JD ! ! !

I agree. How about re-prints of the early years. I'd buy them too!
