Booking accommodation

I am planning to hike the Haute Route in late August. How far in advance do you recommend that I make reservations for my overnight stays in the alpine huts along the way? And the village hotels or guesthouses?

I hiked the Haute Route last year in late July / early August. For the huts (Cabane du Mont Fort, Cabane de Prafleuri, etc) we simply telephoned a day or two in advance. That guarantees not just a bed but also some food. For the smaller towns (La Sage, Gruben), I think it's also a good idea to phone ahead. In the larger towns (Arolla, Zinal, St Niklaus), there are plenty of hotels so you should be able to shop around once you arrive. We weren't able to get accommodation at Hotel Weisshorn, so if you plan to stay there, you should probably book well in advance. Reasonably-priced accommodation in Zermatt might also be tricky; try Hotel Bahnhof (excellent kitchen for cooking your own food) or the YHA.
