Strawberries in a Whiskey Barrel?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Do any of you think growing strawberries in a whiskey barrel is a good idea, or will they winter kill? Also any hints about growing really healthy strawberries?

I do something similar to the idea you have. What I do is put blackberries in a half filled brandy bottle along with a cup of sugar. It makes the best blackberry brandy elixer! You don't have to worry about it freezing in the winter either. I'll have to take your suggestion and try strawberries in with whiskey. Don't know if I can afford a whole barrel, tho.

Ok, I'm sorry, I meant an empty whiskey barrel with dirt in it. You know - planting them in it. Thanks for trying Cabin Fever. You probably thought - Man Alive, that girl likes to drink. Giggle.

I did that once and it was a used barrel..the fruit actually tasted a little off, like whiskey! Apparently, once the barrel has been used for liquor, it seeps into the wood and gives a "flavor" for years...No problem growing the strawberries..this was in MO...and all I did in Winter was fill with alot of mulch....

I would think it depends on how cold it gets there Marilyn. Maybe just try it and see if they survive. You could put a thick layer of mulch on top and haybales around it with a covering for a bit of extra protection. If possible do that and also pull the barrel up against your house for some extra warmth during winter.
