Lens spot removal

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Mamiya 35mm Cameras : One Thread

I am the proud owner of a DSX 1000 with numerous SX lenses. My Mamiya 90-230 Zoom has some slight translucent spotting under front glass. Should I bother taking lens apart at front to remove spots? How do I get to back of front lens? What do I use to remove spots? Thanks, Brad

Brad: the spots are probably a fungus (not uncommon) and are actually easy to remove. To get to the lens, you need a spanner wrench, or one of the "eraser-type" removers (sold online by Micro-Tools) to take off the retainer ring (the ring around the lens with the lens designations marked on it). Once the lens is disassembled, it can be cleaned with Q-tip in a 50-50 solution of ammonia and hydrogen peroxide. The fungus will literally melt right off. Use water to rinse and dry carefully with a soft cotton camera cloth.
