Proper names for colors of Nubians

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

I have a bit of a silly question. I've been looking for a specific colored nubian but I don't know if it has a proper/correct name. The color I'm looking for would be a black body with dark brown/chestnut legs. Silver ears and a white spot on the head. Do these markings have a proper name? Thanks in advance.

Kelly, I don't show so I really wouldn't know what the exact naming would be. I would call it a "Black with brown stockings and frosted ears and a white crown". The really funny thing is I have a little buckling that is just this coloring except he has a little bit of frosting all over! LOL Susan

You've almost described one of my Nubians except mine has more of a light tan color on his legs. I got my guys from a breeder who does show. She called the white spot on the head a white topknot. Other than that, I've only heard the terms spotted and splash used to describe body markings and roan to describe the frosted body colors. Sorry, I know that's not much help.

Unlike Alpines, Nubians don't have proper names for patterns. I do use terms like frosted ears, silver ears, black trim (for the black we get on legs, back ears and face) roaning for frosting, or red/brown (black when trimmed). Right now I am trying to find all the colors for red and brown, since we have mostly that right now. Vicki
