Onions and strawberries

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

Hi all...just found this site yesterday..I really like it..mostly because of the broad spectrum of topics! My question is..I read on the internet that onions and strawberries were companion plants. I recently moved 150 strawberries to raised beds up here by the house and garden. I would like to plant yellow onions right in the same beds with my strawberries...what are your opinions on this? Also, from mowing..I have ALOT of grass clippings..could I rake these up and put it on top of my strawberry beds too? Thought maybe it would be good..but I am not sure.

Thank you so very much..and have a great day and weekend. Thank you very much for this forum!

Hey there and welcome!!! Yes on both counts is my opinion. The grass clippings are a great source of nutrients for the soil, but if you have a lot of weed seeds that could end up being troublesome down the road. I have never planted strawberries and onions together...mostly because strawberry is the only berry I don't particularly like:). I companion plant a lot of things, too.

Hi Sher. Like Doreen said, Grass ok. Onions ? Don't see why not tho. That's the great thing about trying new ideas. If it doesn't work.............become a Cubs fan. "Maybe next year"! Welcome here.

Just make sure there are no herbicides on those clippings Sher. Otherwise you could have dead strawberries.
