Today, May 4, we members of the Catholic Church family honor, in a special way, the following friends of God -- saints whose souls are now in heaven:

Blessed Carthusian Martyrs (English, eighteen monks, martyred by Henry VIII between 1535 and 1540)
Bl. Catherine of Parc-aux-Dames [baptized Rachel] (French, convert from Judaism at age 12, Cistercian nun, 13th century)
St. Cunegund (German, Benedictine nun, d. 1052)
St. Curcodomus of Auxerre (Roman, deacon in France, 3rd century)
King St. Ethelred of Bardney (English, monarch who abdicated, Benedictine abbot, d. 716)
St. Florian (Roman, military officer in Austria, tortured and martyred by drowning in 304)
Bl. George Haydock (English, priest, martyred in 1584 [beatified 1987])
St. Godehard of Hildesheim (Bavarian, bishop, d. 1038)
Bl. Gregory Celli of Verucchio (Italian, Augustinian monk, then Franciscan friar, d. 1343)
St. Hilsindis (French, widow, Benedictine abbess, d. 1028)
St. Judas Cyriacus (bishop, martyred in Jerusalem c. 133)
Blessed Martyrs of England (English, about 200 men and women martyred between 1535 and 1681 [beatified between 1886 and 1929])
Bl. Michael Gedroye (Lithuanian, crippled dwarf, prophet, miracle worker, d. 1485)
St. Nepotian of Altino (Italian, priest, d. 395)
St. Paulinus of Sinigaglia (Italian, bishop, d. 826)
St. Paulinus of Cologne (German, early martyr)
St. Pelagia of Tarsus (Cilician [Turkish], virgin, martyred [roasted in a bronze bull] c. 300)
St. Porphyrius of Camerino (Italian, priest or physician, martyred by beheading in 250)
St. Sacerdos of Limoges (French, Benedictine abbot, bishop, c. 720)
St. Silvanus and 41 companions (Egyptian, bishop and flock, martyred by beheading c. 311)
St. Venerius of Milan (Italian, bishop, d. 409)
