"A female horse given as a gift" is nice, but Bu was a stallion, and was purchased, stories and folktales to the contrary. I think we need to look at the fact that populations today are not necessarily the populations of yesterday. Population migrations, wars, interracial and cross cultural marriages and reproduction have occurred over the past 2300 years. Such events can drastically chnage a population dynamic and mix in decades, let alone centuries, so nothing about populaitons today is a sure thing when we try to transpose the information onto ancient populations.

For a long time it didn't have a name. People called it "little horsie". Then, for a little while they called it "that d*mned nag". But eventually it was named Ox Head.

If anyone tells you its name was Boucephalos, you just blink and look wise and tell them, "Just like I said, it was named Ox Head", since Boucephalos means Ox Head in Greek.
