Well, I have a list...striped brindle dog named Eena. Then you could say Hi, Eena! (Hyena?), a huge Quarterhorse mare named Big Woman, FEMALE labrador named Homer (my Boy, at three, insisted that's what the dog said her name was), Shade (black lab/Irish setter cross), Tozer - cat with two extra toes on each paw, and of course, a friend has a dog named Dog... There are so many more that it's hard to think of them all. Fluffy for a Mastiff, Baron for a huge red Doberman, etc...

-- Gailann Schrader (gtschrader@aol.com), May 07, 2002.

My mother named my dog, oddly it suits her to a "T"

Amulet's Victorian Posey Posey is her name and if you look up a definition it means a handful of flowers. Well she is a handful even at 12, I call her pooch mostly, or fifty other nik names that she seems to know them all (which shouldn't work) She's a terror on the house but much loved, she replaced Amulet's Queen Bee (aptly named by my mother as well) who was truely irreplacable. Can you tell I got my dogs from my mother???? Next one will be a Dixie, no idea what breed, but I've liked the name for just about ever.

-- Ross (amulet@istar.ca), May 07, 2002.

Once had a hereford cow named Little Her, have a Longhorn now named Omelet, all of my black Labs names were Zachary.

-- Polly in NNY (jserg45@hotmail.com), May 07, 2002.

My four year old named his cat "Hot dog." Go figure.

-- chuck in md (woah@mission4me.com), May 07, 2002.

We had a rooster(don't remember what breed, but colourful) named Earl, a steel grey coloured sheep named Remmington(Remmy), and old wether who was particularly ugly named Oh Henry, a male turkey appropriately named Tom, two llamas named Shushuap and Jedi, two pigs named Peter and Petunia, and four giant brown african geese named Eenie, Meenie, Miney and Moe. Moe was the male. Oh, and my brother had a couple ferrets named Festus and Fiesta. That's not even getting into the horses or mom's breeding cats.:)

-- Rebekah in Canada (rebekah_swinden@hotmail.com), May 07, 2002.

Most of our animals came with names, except our old cat. We got her when my daughter was 18 months old. The first time she got to hold the cat, she rubbed her cheek on her and called her Tickles.

Then she named her goldfish Fluffy.

-- Laura (LadybugWrangler@somewhere.com), May 07, 2002.

We named a "runt of the litter' Bullmastiff "Wee Geordie" after the giant in English literature. He topped out at 212 lbs, maybe the name helped.

My cat named himself "Meow"

-- Jay Blair in N. AL (jayblair678@yahoo.com), May 07, 2002.

We had a boar named Mr. Pud...my daughter's choice. Also have a cat named Mojo...again, daughter's choice. Have a pair of English Shepherd's named Lucy & Ethel, a Newf named Scannon. We have two young ducks and for the longest time I thought they were two drakes and planned to name them Sigfried and Roy, but now I think one is actually a hen. Oh well...

-- Stacey (grazeyacres@aol.com), May 07, 2002.

Wide Load. Skinny dog, but I only call him loudly when certain people are around.

We have had quite a few animals and here they are

POE is my DH dog it stands for Pees-On-everything

Cinnamon Raison Toast is my daughter's puppy Why? It's her favorite food.

MR. Big eyes was her beloved fish. Why? he had huge bulging eyes on the side of his head.

and our newest is Midnight Wednesday Fisher. Because we got him on a Wednesday and he is Black.

And last but not least is Ceaser my cat. (I am not nearly as creative as my daugher and Hubby.

-- Jennifer (jfisher4midsouth@rr.com), May 07, 2002.

My pygmy goat is Rosie, dogs are Domino, Beau, Maggie and Ted. Cats were Louie, Buggy (was Buddy, but my son couldn't pronounce it). And of course the geese, Gus and Lucy. Had a Hereford steer named Duke, the absolute dumbest cow on the earth!! I'm going to name the next pup Digger (will be a Basset, when we can find one.) think the name is cute for a hound.

-- Tricia (rosie71@alltel.net), May 07, 2002.

I offered to care for two kittens as the owner was in a bad auto accident... They have since become permanent residents. Their names Lisa and Bart somehow didn't fit them, so I renamed them Momar and Kadafi which fit them much better, and now that they are full grown, still does.

-- Duffy (hazelm@tenforward.com), May 07, 2002.

Can't just name favorites because they all are. CATS: Merlot, Sizzle, Jiggly Puff, Merripu, Claude Monet, Winston, Blueberry, Iaka, Patchuli, Teasle.

DOGS: Fred, Herbie

GOAT: Petunia

HORSES: Oden, Codey, Whiskey

LLAMA: Moon Pie aka Tennessee Tuxedo (his registered name)

-- Susan in MN (nanaboo@paulbunyan.net), May 07, 2002.

I got three male rabbits from some young girls whose bunnies accidently bred. The father came with the name Angel. He wasn't one. We renamed him Don Angelo because he looks like the godfather bunny. We also renamed his two sons. One is Cadbury because he looks like the Cadbury bunny from the commercials around Easter. The other is Skids because he is white with a black "skid mark" running down his back.

-- Bren (wayoutfarm@skybest.com), May 07, 2002.

Coincidentally, we were talking tonight about getting a bearded collie pup and were thinking of names, so this post has tweaked my interest.

We have two goats, Matilda and Mavis (Mavis after my mother), Killer and Paintbrush, the roosters, and Jessie, Chester, and Meadow are our rabbits.

I like 'contradictory' names and human names for our pets and animals. We had a female cat named Fred, a black cat named snowball, and a black Lab named George.

Pet names can be fun and expressive. It's worth the extra thought to think up something unique and descriptive.

We have 3 nubian goats. Hattie, because she has a big white spot on top of her head, Lily, and Lillian. We had a kid named Amos, (he was really cute)but we sold him. We used to have a buck named Mikey. My Rooster is named Mister and our hens are named after old ladies. (Mildred, Phylis, Hilda, and Mabel). Many others animals too, just don't have time to name them all. This is a good thread.

-- Diane (river_roost@lycos.com), May 07, 2002.

ELVIS the rooster... so named by my 4 year old because "He's the KING of the chickens!!" same child also named our solid brown rabbit SPOT because it was one big spot!

-- Marge (mboyc73@yahoo.com), May 07, 2002.

Cats: Erma, Luci, Chumley and Moses

Pygmy Goats: Gretta and Molly

Muscovey Ducks: Texas, Arthur and Hannah (as in "Tex-Art-Hannah")

We have a potbelly pig named "Piggy Rose", a miniature schanuzer named "Stormy", two finches named "Jack" and "Jill", a very retarded cockatiel that we've had for some time but my husband just named today, "Idjet", meaning idiot. Numerous hens. some named and some not, two names being "Lucy" and "Ethel", and a rooster named "Buster". Had a call duck named "Little Mister" and a duck hen named "Maynard". My daugther thought she was male when she named her. I've seen some great names on this post and enjoyed it immensely. Thanks.

-- cindy palmer (jandcpalmer@sierratel.com), May 07, 2002.

We had four goats born within two days of each other. Two females and two males. They were Laverne, Shirley, Lenny, and Squiggy.

-- Erin in AL (erinl411@mchsi.com), May 07, 2002.

One of my favorites was the name my sister came up with for her three foot iguana - Fluffy. We have two chocolate labs - Bailey Souix Denali and Ursus Major Denali - mother and daughter, respectively. Daughter so named because she looked like a newborn brown bear when she was a very young. Now, she's just a large brown turd.

Oh, and the cats are Sasquatch and Yeti - sisters with double paws, naturally.

-- Judi in CT (ddecaro@snet.net), May 07, 2002.

Get ready for a long list (We have lots of animals!)

Dogs - Kenai (born in Kenai, Alaska) and Little Bear

Cats - Kitty, Little Kitty (very tiny), Pixel, Lonesome (showed up and cried for days before we gave up & adopted him), Pumpkin (orange tabby) and Tailypo (aptly named after a demon from Ozark folklore - kind of a long-legged, long-tailed monkey/cat cross) We used to have 2 black cats named Salem & Sabbath; and another named Loki after the Norse god of mischief (very appropriate!. (All deceased.)

Then there are the goats - Pan, Blossom, Iris (as in "bearded Iris"), Gypsy, sisters Sugar & Spice, Superboy (formerly Tom Terrific), Bunny (a white nubian with very long, floppy ears), and Wonka and her twins Willie & Wicket. (Wonka was previously my sister's goat. She once had a companion named Willie - a black & white billie given to her free. Her kids named him "Free Willie" after the B&W whale of movie fame, so Wonka somehow got her name in reference to Willie - only it was "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" that inspired THAT connection. All of which leaves me thinking my sister's kids watch way too many movies. In the spirit of the theme, however, I named Wonka's little boy Willie.)

Iguanas - Guana, Gwena, Gweenie & Bob (my husband was tired of my cutsey "G" names).

Rats - Rattan, Ratatouie, Ratchet & Ratrace.

Chickens - Crow, Snow White, Hector ("Hector Protector"), Silkie Bird (our singing rooster), Heckel & Jeckel, Poe, Little Eagle, Chipmunk, Dolly (enourmous breast!), Patches, Spot and about10 others who still don't have names.

I dedicate this list to the memory of Zeke, Sadie and little Mouse - our much loved Cocker Spaniels, sadly all now gone.

Punkin', an orange tiger, 6 weeks old kitten found on halloween, and first thing it did was, shinge all it's wiskers off, on the Jackolantern. Sassy, short for a 6 toed cat, Sasquache, 'big foot'. (from the humane society) Bo, for 'Hobo',(one year old) a rotwiller that showed up on the porch recliner and stayed there for four days, before I fed him. Chessie a tiger, male cat that sat high in an oak tree and smiled down. short for 'Cheshire' from Alice and wonderland. Cleo, a wonderful, found short hair cat, after Cleopatra. Path Adams( showed up on the porch at christmas"6 weeks old"),austrailian sheperd. Thought it was a rabid rabbit, till it's tail wiggled. The stray, dumped off ones, seem to know the best place to go , on this road. We keep most, and find homes for the rest... Pound dogs are usually wonderful, they seem to know, that this is their last chance and try real hard... It's, just the idiots, that get them little, 'cause they're quite, and then dump them later...that need to be 'fixed'... lacyj

-- lacyj (hillharmony@hotmail.com), May 07, 2002.

When a stray adopted us, we named him Al because the song, "You can call me Al" was playing on the radio right before we found him behind the house 7 years ago. When we went to get another puppy 3 years ago, Dave wanted to name him Jethro, I vetoed that so we settled for Jed. Went back the next day and got his sister, and we named her Ellie. If we get another one we'll probably name her Granny and if it's a boy Dave will get his Jethro! :)

We had twin all white does named Cagney & Lacey, and a pair of black goats named Barbie & Que. Back a few years ago, my herd buck's name was G. Gordon Goat, and we had a wether named Billy C. because the missing parts of his anatomy matched another famous Billy C. of that time period.

We've had some bizarre animal names over the years--sometimes their "normal" names morph into odd ones. I think the oddest was a shepherd/lab cross that my oldest daughter named when she was three, Grover Bow Wow (Grover cuz on Sesame Street, and Bow Wow cuz that's what him says). We've had cats named Peanut Butter and Jelly, AC (Another Cat) and DC (Damn Cat), Boot Scootin' Boogie. The five cats we have now are: Satchmo- someone thought he looked like Louie Armstrong, Oreo, Kelly, Trapper John-which we call Tweak, and the kitten Erin. The current roosters are Harry Potter, and Panda (my youngest got the name Panda from some commercial about pretty, pretty panda), two older chickens named Lady Bird, and Bitch Bird. The dogs we have now are Digger Dan the Travelin' Man, Fat Champy (it was a spin off on Bill Cosby's Fat Albert), Seamus McGillacuddy, and Jack O' Nine Tails-I don't even know where this one came from LOL. The horses are called Star Baby or Tar Baby, My Pooh Bear morphed into Poop, or the Pig, the TB mare's registered name is Keshia, but we call her Emer, or "the beamer". Fiona the Naughty Nubian's full name is Fiona O'Shaunessy, and her daughter is Kiera (it means black/brown in Gaelic)

We were at Wal Mart a few years back and someone was giving away pups they had in a shopping cart just outside the door. Well, this one pup picked us out and what did we name him? Wally of course! Sometimes we call him Wally Mart he knows we mean him. He is a wonderful dog.

-- Irene Burt (renienorm@aol.com), May 08, 2002.

We've had a lot of pigs brought to the sanctuary that we're named things like "Pork Chop", "Bacon", "Hamlet", etc. So when we got a pig that wasn't already named, we decided to call him "Not Dog", after a brand of vegetarian hot dogs.

We have "Mojave", the BLM burro who came from the desert; "Lily", a pure white miniature horse filly...her mama is named "Lacy", so the filly's name is actually "Lacy Lil' Thing"; also "Pookah", the sun conure (parrot)...a "pookah" is an Irish term for a mischievous little elf. We also have "Kate" the iguana, and "Gwenyth" the tortoise, "Lou Ann" the guinea pig, and "Bailey" the baby shetland sheep, who is actually well on his way to becoming our first house-sheep.

-- Shannon at Grateful Acres Animal Sanctuary (gratacres@aol.com), May 08, 2002.

I'm the worst at naming things- a few examples...

Earmuff the cat- very friendly stray cat whose coat is so soft that I thought he'd make a nice pair of earmuffs. His daughters Purrmaster, and PMS(Purrmaster's sister). Then there's OneSpot and TwoSpot- now that shows imagination!

Raisinette is one of my Shar-Pei. I also have a barn dog named Dee (for dumb). A large pony I have is named Pony Thing. She came with the name Mary Jane and I hated it, so we just started calling her Pony Thing and it sorta stuck. There's Little Evil(she was rotten to her mother)and her full sister E2. I bought a colt with the nickname Tink- he wore a bell when he was a baby 'cuz his mom is blind. I guess we'll call him Tinkerbell after he's gelded.

I once had white male Angora rabbits named Bugsy, Harvey and Woolie Nelson and a blue/gray female named Bonnie Blue Bunnie, Daughter of Scarlet O'Hare and Rhet Bunnie.

Currently have a baby buck kid named Timex. He tried to be born head first, his mama rejected him and the other night he got caught outside in a rainstorm and spent the night huddled in the lee of the barn. He was a mudspattered mess when I found him but one he'd had a bottle, he was fine.
