You must have soft dirt on your place!! save your money and find a regular backhoe i have a woods 3 point it works great but slow in hard dirt or rock!! Most lawn mowers arnt big enought to handle a back hoe on um!!

There are backhoes just about any size imaginable. My experience with small rentals was lack of hydraulic power. Really weak unless you had soft dirt with no rocks. I think small backhoes could be engineered to be much more functional. As to plans, put "homemade backhoe" in google search engine. One of most interesting things that will pop up is "cadplans" to build your own from scratch or a kit. Many of their designs dont need any tractor and can be hitched to vehicle and towed down hiway. By way weirdest backhoe I have seen pic of is one that mounted on an old Gravely walk behind tractor. Gravely had to have had most attachments of any small tractor I have ever seen. To be sure the Gravely mounted backhoe had to be very rare and maybe a one of a kind, I dont really know.

All this said, i suggest renting a bigger backhoe. You'll get more done in a weekend than week or more with tiny backhoe.

Put "gravely backhoe" in google search. Heres nice picture of the "Terromite" backhoe for a Gravely: http://www.stevenchalmers.com/Gravely/TM/TM_04_Photo.shtml

I've seen info on an Italian backhoe designed to fit a walking trcator like the BCS. At $7,000 I doubt anyone would be interested for home use.

The Gravely backhoes were production items. They didn't make many. Collectors grab'em when they find them.

I've got a Trencherman II from Northern Hardware that works pretty good. Has a 12" bucket and can be pulled around with a pickup. Built pretty solid. Around $4000. Fully self contained with a 8 hp motor. Digs to about 6'.

I have noticed stand-alone backhoes on eBay that appear to be constructed from the Cadplans plans. The seem to be asking about $4000 and I believe that included delivery.
