"Mother E.N. mag. promotes Dairy goats!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

Anyone see the dairy goat article in the June/July issue of Mother Earth News yet? The article took up 13 pages!!

I thought the magazine did a good job talking up the positives of goating to folks new to the idea of dairy goat ownership. They seemed to cover all the basics (breed types, worming, trimming hooves, disbudding, castration, milking, owning more than one, plans for a milk stanchion, feedbox, even cheese recipes).

Although there were more nubian photos than any other breed- I did see photos of all the other main breeds plus, Dwarf Nubs and a mention of Kiko and Boer for meat.

Try to check out the article!

Thanks Wendy, I loved MEN back in the olden days, newer both it and Organic Gardening are horrid. Perhaps they are making a change for the better? I will check it out! Aren't Kiko's beautiful animals? I really though they would take off especially with as hardy as they are. Vicki

It's about time TMEN got back to the basics. Their old magazines were very instrumental in getting me started in goats to begin with.

Sure hope mine gets here soon, I just renewed my subscription to MEN for yet another yr. I sure miss the old days. I often will read the old magazines and think of the good ole' days. I think MEN basically had to do something to increase sales and reader involvement. You do know they pay 100.00 for every article they publish submitted by readers?

Guess what?

I emailed M.E.N. telling them I was grateful that they gave such a good overview of dairy goating (I mentioned this forum, BTW). I also sent a terrific (it really is a good one!) photo I took last year with two of my children asleep with a LaMancha curled up in one arm, with a Togg, and a Saanen seemingly standing guard. M.E.N. liked both and said they would be intereasted in placing them in the letter to the editor-section of an upcoming issue.

CoolBeans! Hooray for goats! I too love the old M.E.N. I've read then since I was a teen. I think they are doing all they can to make the mag work.

Hurray for MEN! I too, used to love 'em in the old days. Even took them for a couple of years after they went suburban. Alas, all my old copies are gone now and I miss 'em! Maybe, with encouragement MEN will get back to basics. After John sold the mag, they certainly went down hill.

I don't think they pay $100 for every article you submit that they publish. The Boer buck pictured in that issue is my herd sire and I wrote the articles on castrating and raising wethers for meat. Never saw any money for it, although I did get a t-shirt. *grin*
