black specks on film

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Film & Processing : One Thread

Last night I processed a few roles of fp4+ (120) in sprint developer. I noticed this morning when using a loupe that a number of frames had black specks on them--yet, nothing seems to appear on the film surface. I used distilled water for the developer and atap water for the wash and fix. Any thoughts on what this could be?

David, its most likely dust on the film at the taking stage. Its a common and annoying problem for sheet film users but not exclusively.

Dust on the film at the taking stage would result in clear spots, not black spots.

Your right - I didnt read it carefully enough and thought it referred to prints rather than negs. Sorry.

David, do you use a developer that comes in powder form ? If you do, you have probably not stirred well enough while diluting it. One has to make sure that no solid particles of developer powder remain in the solution when diluting it.
