Sabbath

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

I had heard good reasons why we Catholic Christians celebrate the Lords day (the Sabbath) on Sunday, rather than Saturday. All the way up until Christ died, the Sabbath (meaning Saturday) was celebrated on Saturday. There are good explanations in the Catechism, but I thought that this would be a good topic (especially for those who might not understand).

The seventh day (Saturday) was the day the Lord rested, and so He concecrated it and made it Holy. The main idea was to spend a day resting and focusing on God, rather than working and focusing on man. When Christ rose from the dead (on Sunday) it is noted that the Apostles began to meet and read Scripture and celebrate Mass on Sunday (the first day - or eighth day). In keeping Gods day (one day out of the week) Holy, the Apostles did not contradict the intent of the 3rd Commandment, but rather slid it over a day so as not only to celebrate a day of rest, but to celebrate the rising of Christ and the salvation of souls.

Can anyone add to this. Thanks.

In Christ

Not to mention the fact that the Holy Spirit descended upon Mary and the Apostles as well. There is a beautiful Litany called "Litany For Sunday" which states everything that happened on Sunday. I have it among a whole book of Litanies called "A Prayerbook of Favorite Litanies" from Tan publishing. I would recommend it to those that like to pray litanies.

Hi, guys.
Folks have talked about this topic on numerous occasions here at the forum. I located some of the old threads that you may enjoy reading. I recommend that you start with the opening message from Ed Lauzon at the top of the first link:

John,

How do you do that "link thing" (the blue). How do you enter it like that? Link 1, Link 2, etc. I have seen that done a number of times on this site and other forums as well. How is it done?

Jake, thank you for that information. I always wondered why we celebrate on Sunday.

Also, once the Apostles followed Jesus and they were baptized in the Spirit, did they automatically give up all of their Jewish beliefs? You and John, as well as others here, are so knowledgeable. MaryLu

The early Christians actually celebrated the Jewish Sabbath on Saturday then Broke bread on Sunday in the manner similar to our Eucharistic celebration. Our present day Mass is still the combination of the Jewish as Christ was in Life and the Christian as it is remembered in his death and rising.

Thank you, Fred. Where did you learn so much about our Catholic Faith? I've been Catholic all my life, but there are so many things I really do not know about it. Maybe I should take an RCIA class.

Are you a deacon or a Knight?

MaryLu, this page has tons more than you need or want to know, but you will find a few basic things (making italics, bold, and hyperlinks [to click on]) within the first 5% of the page.
For an example of a link, look for the line that says "a href" and "Philip Greenspun." You must use the "<" and the ">" and the quotation marks exactly as shown, and whatever you "open," you must close with a slash ("/"). You'll see what I mean.

Marylu

I learned by reading everything I could find, Scripture sharing at the Church with others, took classes that were available at the parish offered by the diocese of NH. I also learned more of my faith through the required readings of the Knight of Columbus degree studies. Yes, I am a Fourth Degree Knight too. I never give up reading as I go along. I have studied some of the other so called christian religions just to find out what they are so I can be able to understand their faults and what things are wrong with them. I am speaking of Mormons and Jehovahs Witnesses. It is horrifying how many lies and half truths are in them both. They both deny the deity of Christ totally.

I am no expert on anything of our religion, but I am aware of the truth that is in Catholism and am learning more each and everyday from people like you, Gene, John and Chris B. There has been an ongoing hunger on my part to know more and it will not stop til I die. I have always had this inquisitive mind and cannot stop yet. It is researching and compiliation of technical data for years that I did as a living as a Quality Analyst that keeps me looking for more each and every day. God gave me that gift and I want to use it as long as I can. For him of course.

Blessings

JFG, thank you. I will try it and let you know how I make out.

and, Fred, thank you for your response. You are a very intelligent person and very well-informed regarding the Catholic faith. Now I see why.

God Bless and enjoy the long weekend. MaryLu
