Online Art Tutorials/ Mecha/ Japanese Robots

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Public Art : One Thread

I really, really, desperately, need a reference as to where I can find tutorials about japanese robots. I am very interested in the art and would love to recieve some guidance on how to draw them.(the robots, mecha) I've searched all over the place on the net and so far haven't really found anything. What I did find didn't give me the anatomy of mecha but rather a way of thinking of where everything would be in proportion.

I have a site with some tutorials and links to tutorials, and a message board. Even if my tutorial isn't much help I'm sure other tutorials in the links might be. I'm going to start work on some more tutorials soon.

my site is: http://www.b-s-r.cjb.net

I hope it helps you!

You can also buy the How to Draw Manga: Giant Robots book from your local book, art, or just japanese stuff store and it should inform you a bit.

Well, there is book by Christopher Hart called Mecha Mania.

-- Myles (eva01_echo@hotmail.com), December 29, 2002.

But as we all know, Christopher Hart is Satan.

Stick with the How to Draw Manga line and not contribute to the commercial hack job that is Christopher Hart's poorly executed "mania" series.

your wrong, christopher hart is the best seller.

p.s the people who write how to draw manga are satan

Mat, money making isn't the issue. Christopher Hart's books are childishly written. They really don't explain how to draw real well. i know, I own a copy of manga mania, read, and at this time have a copy of from the library, mecha mania. It's nice. Some cool mechs. But his writing SIMPLY SKIPS STEPS. On the other hand, How To Draw Manga has pages upon pages of reference art that is very matured, and shows a lot of know how. Maybe it's just a matter of style, but Mr. Hart's style is too american for my tastes.

I find the christopher hart series quite good but then i could already kinad draw, the way he draws the skeleton of the image is good and different from a lot of other books which use a very simple skeleton, although using the christopher hart skeleton style is a bit harder it really is good.

i learnt how to draw mech from the site www.polykarbon/tutorials.com

-- pker dude (biggles_91@hotmail.com), April 27, 2004.

I met Christopher Hart. What he does is not anime, it's so americanized. I'm sorry for those who enjoy what he does, but he claims he knows all these things, after the presentation I asked him questions to test him and he doesn't know alot about anime and manga.. -mei

I think what he meant by saying Christopher Hart is Satan, is what he plays as a seiryuu on DBZ

Just thought I'd let ya's all know how amusing I found it to read the little conversation - Christopher Hart rocks, no he's the devil, no he's good, no he sucks... Very amusing. Since I have not seen the book I won't make any comment as to whether or not he is evil personified. (Though it would be interesting to know for sure, would it not?) Okay. That's all I have to say.

Btw - I too have looked around for mecha tutorial's and found two so far. Granted I wasn't looking that hard (meant to be doing schoolwork) but still. Sorry I couldn't help.

I'm glad to see that this entire discussion has completely changed to a flame war over wether or not a book is good. If you like the book you like it, if not, then don't buy it, end of story. But I too am looking for a WEB SITE that has good mecha tutorials. I must repeat myself here I feel, A WEB SITE, not a book, cause right now I'm not made of money. So if you want to be childish keep argueing about a damn book, or be helpfull and post some sites for me and Wung Fei Hung.

I have to agree with the comment made above and contribute yet another plea for some sort of tutorial for drawing Mechs, all I have for reference is a Japanese version of Evangelion, and I don't know about the rest of u but I find it hard to emulate someone like Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.

-- Shoji (GreyDrake9@hotmail.com), October 04, 2004.

i haven't looked there yet, but deviantart must have some good tutorials on how to draw mechs. i've never been a fan of robots, machinery, spacecrafts or any kind of metal thing when it comes to drawing but now i have to illustrate a gang of super deformed mechas and it's utterly frustrating. they look like mini mazingers, he! -_-U ..oh well...

-- Teh Rat (ratata@hotmail.com), November 10, 2004.

I saw a link above named www.polykarbon/tutorials.com . That one doesn't work it should be www.polykarbon.com/tutorials. :D BTW it's a great site, I really learned the basics and more of how to draw some mechs.

basically Chris Hart rocks and so does polycarbon.com, chris hart has his own style like erm.. EVERY artist so dont knock it, its pretty hard for someone to draw how they dont know how to so give him a break, i admit his boks are a bit 'yeah oooo wow' but dont read that bit stoopid

-- hazmongrel (hazmongrel@hotmail.com), December 22, 2004.

Plz dnt go into the whole 'Chris hart' bit again! And anyway in answer to your original question try going to polycarbon.com (It really does rock) or if you want a bit more info on weapons and components http://members.tripod.com/~NuGraphite/tutorial.html is the place you want. Ok I hope It help
